Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now

He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.

For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.

Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.

He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor

just an addition - of the records he beat today, two are majorly of note.

one was Ted Cruz (im sure some have heard of him; hes the one that went out of country when his state froze and dozens died yeah hes a pos) Senator of texas, overall piece of shit (he was my senator i can say that; i moved hes still senator) and he was doing it to ~block affordable healthcare~ (ie healthcare from gov like most of you have in favor of our lovely hellish version, private healthcare)

and Strom Thurmond. who was against brown v board. he was against desegregating. basically he was a horrifically racist man (my b he did that for funsies, he did the fillibuster against black people just, getting the right to vote! (57 civil rights act) not even the citizens act. he just fucking hated black people)

so among other things - it means something that for once - the record is being held by someone wanting to improve the US. to increase our rights. rather than to keep them away from people. this was not a fillubuster, was just for funsies, but im hoping they start using that fillubuster since we cant work at getting rid of it

and please dont let it be lost on you how cory booker is black. and he just broke the record of someone who didnt even think they should share water. ihe only died in 03. history is not that long ago. improvements, even while superficial, are meaningful. we have more to do, but, its a start. people asked him to do better, and he did/ is trying. lets hope (ask not so politely or politely ofc) the same from the rest of them.

Have you ever looked closely at a car windshield?

The edge of the glass is painted where it is glued to the car but it has these small dots between the clear and painted glass.

These are there for a reason. When the sun hits the glass the painted areas and the clear areas will absorb heat at different rates. This causes the glass to expand and contract differently putting stress on the glass.

These dots help the glass to warm up more evenly over a larger area so the glass does not suffer stress that could cause it to spontaneously explode.

Fun fact: the Tesla cybertruck doesn’t have these.

the US education system isn't even that bad. many countries have objectively worse-funded education systems, but don't display the same belligerent idiocy as them. the fundamental issue is that USAmericans have no real reason to care about the rest of the world, as it will never meaningfully affect their lives unless they decide to go on vacation or take part in an invasion. their lack of intellectual curiosity is because the rest of the world never really registers as a real place.

'oh actually our education system is really underfunded' that's very unique of you. no other country is like that. i know people who are not legally allowed to attend higher education because of their gender who demonstrate more intellectual curiosity about the world than you. 'actually we're all struggling and just trying to survive so theres no time to care about the world' no you're right the USA is the poorest country on earth after all. would sort of break the argument if people from much more impoverished countries showed significantly more interest in learning about the outside world than usamericans do. almost like people everywhere suffer from lack of access to education but the imperial core uniquely generates people who have no material reason to care, specifically because of their privilege even in poverty. 'um actually most of us can't afford a vacation overseas' so, again, since you're not going to be invaded, and your government isn't at the international financial gunpoint of a foreign empire, you will literally never be affected by other countries.

you tell a usamerican that the people they bomb, invade, coup, and sanction have it worse than they do and they start sobbing and crying about how they're actually the least privileged people on the planet, because they don't have [social welfare that western europe has] because, again, they don't see the rest of the world, outside the west, as a real place.

She very specifically said that it's because the unique situation of the U.S. as a global imperialistic hegemony creates material conditions where americans don't have a material incentive to care about what happens in the rest of the world because it will never affect their lives, while people in the third world have a material incentive to care what goes on in the rest of the world because we are almost universally at the mercy of foreign powers, especially the US. If your reading of that is "this is not an issue of education quality it's a character flaw that all americans happen to have just because" and not "this is not an issue of education quality it's an issue of how the U.S.'s hegemonic place in global culture and politics creates citizens with no material reason to care about the rest of the world" I think you're pretending to be stupid on purpose.

The brain zaps continue.

My doctor responded and sent in the medications to the pharmacy. But then a half hour later realized it was my old one because that's still on file for whatever reason so he updated it to be sent to my current pharmacy.

And I'm like ok great. I'll get it this afternoon, take a half dose to not overwhelm the withdrawal, and be on my way to stopping these zaps!

Then I go to the pharmacy. And they say it's too soon for a refill. Which is a lie, because I ran out of my last bottle LAST WEEK. And because I have a bad habit of forgetting to take my medications that bottle had already lasted me longer than the intended month, so after like 6 weeks it really should not be too soon for a refill. And they're like "Yeah no requests were sent in" though I got confirmation 6 hours ago that it was.

And because my brain is zapping, I can barely even make sense of what I'm hearing, and can't articulate any clarifying questions. And my period is 4 days late, probably because my body is so thrown off by this week of withdrawal, so I'm also emotional and nearly start crying while talking to the pharmacist.

And that was ultimately a failure. So now I'm still zapping.

I hate this country's healthcare system so much.

Good news. My doctor sent it in again and called the pharmacy to confirm they had it ready for me. So it is ready.

Bad news. On my way to a rehearsal this evening I stopped by the pharmacy literally 15 minutes after he told me they had it. And there was an absurdly long after-work line of people waiting for prescriptions. And if I took the time to wait (which honestly looked like at least a 30 minute line) then I'd be late to rehearsal.

Soooooo. I am still zapping and I'm still in withdrawal. BUT the end is in sight. And by the morning I'll not be in withdrawal anymore. Yayyyyyyy.
