Did ENA inspire your split-face designs?
No, Picasso, Kousuke Sugimoto and Nishioka Kyoudai are who inspired me to draw like that, along with old sculptures. I should mention I was drawing like that before the ENA animated shorts came out ^^; They are great btw! Very much in line with exactly what I enjoy & what I like to do with animation, if you haven't seen my shorts before. Joel G's work is amazing and if you haven't checked out his even older animated shorts you should!
I will say I have shyed away from drawing like that because so many people keep asking me this haha. To me it feels a bit like people are pointing at me like I am copying or something. I find ENA's design funny because she resembles how I drew myself back in the day a bit. Joel G and I have been mutuals & fans of each other's work for longer than I can remember so I wonder sometimes if it's a coincidence or not haha
The fact that during the entirety of Great God Grove I had zero idea who's genders were who's was fantastic to me. You guys put so many different flavors of men, women, and everything in between is wonderful. From the bottom of my character designer heart thank you!!!! ALSO, the whole story with Click Clack & Thespius? Beautiful. It heavily reminded me of the vibes of PSI King's Sensorium from Psychonauts 2 in a very good way..was that at all possibly some inspiration for HobbyHoo design wise? Just curious!!
It is mostly due to me making characters + their designs without thinking about their gender beforehand. That is usually how it goes. Sometimes I assign them a gender afterwards (and change nothing about the design), sometimes I do not and they just kinda exist. That is why I don't have a lot of answers for some character's pronouns. Thanks!
Also no Hobbyhoo was not inspired by the Sensorium. Hobbyhoo was actually concepted before Psychonauts 2 came out. They are just both aesthetically inspired by the same thing: Heinz Edelmann (who art directed Yellow Submarine) & other 70s pop art.
