This is the third time that we have done this tournament ….but the first time that we decided to document the results as we work through the tournament. In 2014 Spencer Tracy was the last person standing. In 2015 Humphrey Bogart won. Who will be the last person standing in 2016?
The rules to qualify for the tournament: Actor/actress had to star in a movie before 1960, star in at least 30 movies and be ranked in the Top 64 when looking at the average Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) Score for their movies.
The rules to advance to the next round: The first four rounds are a best-of-five movie matchup. The last two rounds (Final Four & Finals) are a best-of-seven. Using a random number generator each actor/actress’ movie is drawn from their Top 30 UMR rated movies. The movie with the higher UMR score wins that matchup. First one to either 3 or 4 wins moves to the next round. Movie can only be used once for the entire tournament….which is why 30 movies is the minimum to qualify for the tournament. This continues until only one actor/actress is left.
2016 Classic Actor Movie Tournament Bracket
The better the Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) average score the higher the seed. That means Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant, James Stewart and Gregory Peck are the Top Seeds.

So Cary Grant is this year’s winner!
Congratulations. Really both finalists are top notch.
My drivel part of my comment…since that is the term you like to use ..
So ends my personal 2016 awards season. Will just check out on youtube the memorial videos from award shows that still feature them the next day or so afterwards. Otherwise, since lifetime awards are rarely show in Canada and I have no interest in actors my age or younger unless they are from Hollywood families and have ties from past generations I cannot see myself watching award shows anymore.
TCM’s 31 days of Oscar theme of degrees of separation makes no sense here since the channel does not own the rights to some of the movies so I guess I’ll be skipping introductions and conclusions for the next month.
Hmmm less than a week to be the same age as Jack Benny. Why couldn’t I have been born during the summer?
Your Peck almost won…Grant was done to 22nd An Affair To Remember and 24th Father Goose….while Peck had 3rd Gentleman’s Agreement, 7th 12 O’Clock High and 8th The Omen left…..all would have beaten Grant…but he fell short by one movie when his last high number movie…The Boys From Brazil was called…..it was fun.
Thanks for the drivel part. Not thinking you will be missing much. The Revenant will get called early and often. That is strange about TCM’s 31 Days of Oscar. Hey Jack Benny stayed 39 forever….my mom still claims to be 39….so you can too. But the 40 bandwagon has room for you…..just in case you do not want to be 39 anymore.
Claudette Colbert will be the next page. That will be the 47th AFI Screen Legend completed…only leaving the 3 silent movie stars…Gish, Pickford and Keaton…hard to believe that project is getting so close to the end.
As always….I appreciate your visit and your comment.
Hey Flora
1. Yep Grant and Peck are the last two standing
2, Grant’s movies left 3rd, 6th, 8th, 19th, 22nd, 24th, 26th and 27th
3. Peck’s movies left 3rd, 7th, 8th, 11th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd, 26th, and 28th
4. Thinking Peck has the edge.
5. I figured you would know who Eldred was.
6. I like that “My Darling Greg as I like to call him vs. Even I’d Like to be Cary Grant.”
7. This silly fun is almost over. But I glad I put it all on paper.
Thank for stopping by.
Hey Flora….thanks for the comment. I am having fun with this tournament…..granted I know it is pretty silly…..but it is still fun. In 2014 I did not have enough classic actors to field a 64 person tournament…..two years later and I had to leave out 20 or so people. Your favorite, Mr. Peck, has a good chance to be this years champ…..he is the only one not to lose a single matchup yet. If anything I will have the results in a better place when 2017 comes around.
So Cary Grant is this year’s winner!

Maybe 2017 will be Peck’s year.
I knew as soon as I saw Eldred vs. Archie I knew who the last two standing were. 🙂
Only in school was Gregory referred to by his first name.
My Darling Greg as I like to call him vs. Even I’d Like to be Cary Grant..
Flora
Oh, and Peck said once he could feel Grant’s fingerprints all over the scripts he was given to read.
Flora
Hey Flora…I could see that. I do not think Peck was the only one getting Grant’s refused movies. Grant turned down many many classic roles.

This page is silly but fun, I agree.
These last few days, I need a bit of silliness
Pretty good Final Four….Peck, Gable, Grant and Tracy. Now I am trying to figure how to do the last rounds here on the website.
Bruce:
Am I correct in guessing that the directors are supposed to be like Fantasy Basketball team owners?
Was not going to comment but I see that only Steve Lensman has commented.

Directors are more like the managers. One day I will have enough directors to do a tournament for them….on the classic side that is a long way to go.
