I have seen 16 of John’s films; the highest ranked I have not seen is Never Let Go.
And Dan comes and takes away Bob’s victory. I actually watched Never Let Go last night. Sellers is good, but I found the movie to be a one note movie….it grew tiresome to watch as the lead character pretty much does the same scene every single time. Good stuff as always.

Great coincidence that you should have been listening to a podcast in which Never Let Go is mentioned. Here are 2 more trivia facts about that movie:
1/In the movie Todd plays good guy John Cummins and Sellers is vicious bad guy Lionel Meadows. It was initially supposed to be the other way round but Peter INSISTED on paying Meadows. As that was arguably the more ‘juicy’ part maybe Peter was getting revenge for losing out on the top billing spot. Some wise viewer on this site once explained to you how impotant billing is to movie stars-you should be grateful to him!!!
2/As a tribute to Richard’s hero John [Johnny] Cummins pop star Adam Faith the film’s 3rd male lead sings over the closing credits the rousing American Civil War song “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” I still have Adam’s hit-recording of it in my music collection. I’ll put my Dan hat on now and remind you that score was the main theme music to 1953’s Stalag 17 for which Golden Holden won his Oscar.

In the 1986 movie Best Shot [aka Hoosiers in US] Fern Person’s*** Opal Freener says to Gene Hackman’s coach Norman Dale who has been getting a lot of hassle from the snobbish parents of his pupils and other townsfolk “The sun don’t shine on the same dog’s ass everyday but Mister you sure ain’t seen a ray of light since you got here!”
***Actress Fern died in 2012 at the age of 101.
In short with his comments that mean ole Work Horse was refusing to let me enjoy my moment in the sun. However I am compensated by the fact that there is a potential flaw in his statement.
Dan’s knowledge of movies, their stars and their linkage is immense and highly comprehensive and very professionally articulated on this site. However the downside of so much knowledge according to some psychologists is that as the brain can only retain a great deal of knowledge with complete precision at any one time it is possible that on occasions Dan’s mind is playing tricks with him about having seen certain movies that he is genuinely but maybe erroneously listing as “have seens”
I too have experienced that difficulty at times when looking down The Work Horse’s filmographies of stars. I initially think that I have for example seen a Loy/Leach screwball comedy that I seem to recall as rubbish when I see that WH praises the film and I begin to wonder if my mind is indeed playing tricks on me.
Such a conundrum doesn’t normally arise in the case of the Work Horse’s own “have seen” lists as, unlike Flora for example, he rarely beats me in the totals!!!!
Hey Bob….good comment. Not sure why this went to my pending file. But it has been approved….and Dan is no longer lurking…..as he has surfaced and taken the top spot with 16 movies seen. Pretty sure Dan has some pretty awesome movie tracking items. For me it is Letterboxd. Since 2014 I have logged over 5,000 movies there. And that is just the ones I have seen since then….I wish I had my entire movie watching history there. Good stuff.

Hey Flora thanks for checking out our John Guillermin movie ranking page. Tally count: Bob is the leader with 12 seen. I have seen 7 and you are at 5. I have seen all three of your favorites…and I have seen Skyjacked. I want to see The Day They Robbed The Bank of England….but so far I have not even come close to seeing it. Good stuff as always.
I have seen 12 of John’s movies and they are listed below. My faves among them are The Blue Max and Town on Trial.
I also liked Never Let Go and remember it quite well also for the controversy that surrounded it in the English newspapers. Production was halted for 3 months during the shooting of it and the cast and crew had to be sent home to cool their heels or the project would have been bankrupt.
The reason for the shut-down: Richard Todd and Peter Seller fought over top billing and nether would concede. The matter had not been nailed down in the contracts so the studio had no power to force either to back-down
[and to think guys like former viewer John backed up by The Work Horse used to strenuously argue with me that billing was unimportant!].Todd eventually won and I think that was fair as he had been a top British star longer than Sellers at that juncture.
The Work Horse musn’t want to take sides: he mentions neither of them in his co-star links column above! However it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good: according to supporting actress Carol White during the long period of time that they were laid-off from the film she had sexual affairs with the 3 male leads: Sellers, Todd and pop singer Adam Faith
A very famous role of Todd’s was 1949’s war drama The Hasty Heart co-starring Ronald Reagan. In a TV interview Richard told how he and Ronnie became friends during the filming and regularly after that exchanged Xmas cards each year-
until Ronnie became President and the processes went only one way, from Richard. I suppose that’s an American trait. “Put a beggar on horseback and he’ll ride to hell!”

Hey Bob. Interesting that you brought up Never Let Go. I have been listening to the Pure Cinema Podcast….and one of the movies they highlighted over there was Never Let Go. In that segment they were talking about Guillermin….and though I knew alot of the movies they mentioned….his name was unknown to me. The best way I get to know somebody like this is to do an UMR page on them.
So you have seen 12 of his movies. Flora is at 5. So where do I fall…let me count……7…I might have seen King Kong Lives…but I have no memory of it…so I will not count it. Of the 12 you have seen…I have seen 4 of the ones you mentioned. Apparently Never Let Go is on YouTube….so I plan on knocking that one out soon.
So Todd and Sellers fought about billing….well….when I add in the co-star information…Peter will get the top spot. But at the time Sellers was still aways from his stardom. As always thanks for the information.
