A datathon is planned to take place around International Mother Language Day. We intend for this to have a greater scope than last year's independence day label-a-thon in that
1. we plan to improve more than just labels, descriptions, and aliases on items, and
2. we hope to encourage participation from other communities of Wikidata users, including (but not limited to) those from nearby countries.
If you would like to take part in the datathon, feel free to add your name below.
UPDATE: since there has been good progress made on the tasks in this datathon, the datathon will now end on International Open Data Day, much as the editathon that was held last year also began on International Mother Language Day and ended on International Open Data Day.
The datathon is officially over! Thanks to the 13 of you who contributed to the tasks in the datathon! |
Dates
[edit]February 20, 2019, 18:15 Coordinated Universal Time – March 2, 2019, 18:15 Coordinated Universal Time (23:45 Indian Standard Time, 00:15 the next day Bangladesh Standard Time)
Rules
[edit]- Please only put links to SPARQL queries (or TABernacle, or PetScan, or some other external tool) on this page. If a task requires an explicit listing of items that cannot be generated from a query of some sort, then please create a subpage of this page with that listing and link to it here.
- Just prior to the start of the datathon, a statistic will be placed next to each 'short, specific' and 'long, general' that shall represent the 'start state' of that task.
- These consist of the total number of items returned by a given query, minus the number of items which have incomplete information in that query. For example, for Hindi winners (people) of the Filmfare Award for Best Director (see below), the query returns 10 results, but 3 of them are missing some information, and so the start state is noted (10 - 3).
- The success of the datathon will come down to how much progress has been made from these start states: increasing the number of returned items in a query helps, but so does adding information to items to fix their incompleteness.
- You are welcome to mark a task as done by adding
{{Done}}
next to the query if the results from that query are complete.
Tasks
[edit]Short, specific tasks
[edit]- Improve data about holders of Indian political positions:
- Chief Justices of India (check reference) (47 - 44)
- Governors of Reserve Bank of India (check reference) (25 - 24)
- Label additions:
- Add labels for Pakistani districts (out of 157, 0 in as, 47 in bn, 0 in gu, 128 in hi, 3 in kn, 17 in ml Done, 2 in mr, 16 in ne, 1 in or, 12 in pa, 0 in sat, 0 in si, 32 in ta, 0 in tcy, 1 in te, 157 in ur at the moment)
- Add labels for Bangladeshi districts (out of 64, 1 in as, 64 in bn, 5 in gu, 64 in hi, 4 in kn, 5 in ml Done, 4 in mr, 22 in ne, 1 in or, 2 in pa, 0 in sat, 4 in si, 63 in ta, 1 in tcy, 4 in te, 64 in ur at the moment)
- Add labels for Indian districts (you'd be surprised how many labels for Indian districts may not be present in your language!) (out of 728, 76 in as, 388 in bn Done, 556 in gu, 665 in hi Done, 101 in kn, 172 in ml Done, 632 in mr, 536 in ne, 378 in or, 130 in pa, 4 in sat, 10 in si, 700 in ta, 6 in tcy, 588 in te, 453 in ur at the moment)
- Link films and film people to the film awards they won:
- For those categories with person-song pairs (e.g. Best Lyricist), make sure that the person is winning the award for the song in the film and not for the film itself.
- Filmfare Awards:
- Finish award information for Sahitya Akademi Award winners (remember adding labels to these in the Independence Day label-a-thon? For reference, the non-query list of award winners is on this page.)
Long, general tasks
[edit]Finely specify parliamentary terms for Lok Sabha members
[edit]- unspecified term - all items in this query should instead be present in at least one of the below queries (2399 - 2362)

Very long, specific tasks
[edit]- Add labels in your language for most calendar year, calendar day of a given year, and calendar month of a given year (contact User:Mahir256)
- Add and improve data about temples in West Bengal. check existing list (contact User:Bodhisattwa)
- to be announced
Tasks based on SPARQL queries of the day
[edit]- (from 15 February) Add more items about Indian ambassadors
- There are items for different positions (e.g. "ambassador of India to Iraq" and "ambassador of Germany to India"), so in principle there's every incentive to expand the set of items of India-related ambassadors so long as there are items for people that have held these positions—i.e. don't just create the position items and then leave them unlinked.
- (from 13 February) Add more albums by Indian music groups
- Please make sure, at the very least, that the groups themselves have items already and that both the groups and their albums are present in sufficiently comprehensive music databases (such as MusicBrainz, Discogs, and AllMusic).
- (from 10 February) Add more scholarly articles published in Indian journals
- (Note that the query only reports on a select few journals' articles; to find statistics on others requires some modifications to the query.) The easiest way to do this would involve using the CrossRef API to find a list of articles, and then use SourceMD to make items for those articles.
- (from 9 February) Expand the flight graph between Indian airports
- Please make sure to cite sources from the airlines themselves, or aviation authorities should they have this info as well. Ask Mahir if you wish to include historical flight service data.
- (from 8 February) Finish the hierarchy of divisions, districts, subdivisions, and subdistricts of Bihar
- Note that items for (most of?) the subdistricts do exist (with pages linked to the Hindi Wikipedia), but they are not yet linked to their corresponding district items (via the subdivision items they are in -- and there do not exist items for most subdivisions of Bihar).
- (from 6 February) Add more books by Jnanpith Award winners
- Make sure to abide by the model set by Wikidata:WikiProject Books when doing so.
- to be announced
