What is a femboy, anyway?

You might’ve seen this word on TikTok or Instagram, but what does it mean? Why are people calling themselves femboys, or making memes using the term? We’re here to fill you in!

What is a femboy?
A femboy is someone who identifies as male but who has traditionally feminine tastes, aesthetics, or interests, like makeup, girly fashion, or hobbies that are often seen as feminine.

Is femboy a sexual orientation?
Nope! Being a femboy has nothing to do with who you’re attracted to, which is what a sexual orientation is. Instead, it’s more of a gender identity. Sometimes, though, it’s not even a gender identity, and simply more of an aesthetic.

Femboy also isn’t the same thing as being transgender or nonbinary, though transgender and nonbinary people can use the term to describe themselves, if they want.

Can girls or nonbinary people be femboys?'
If they want to, yes! Being a femboy isn’t actually about the gender you were assigned at birth, or even the gender you claim now. It’s more of a mindset, or an attitude that blends traits of masculine and feminine. It uses “boy” as a foundation, then decorates the room with “girly” things. If you can get down with that, you can be a femboy!

Where did “femboy” come from?
Femboy started as a derogatory term sometime in the ‘90s, or even earlier, to talk down to boys who showed feminine interests. Over time, though, the term softened and was reclaimed, and now it’s more widely known and accepted.

Should I call other people femboys?
Like any reclaimed term, it’s best not to call someone a “femboy” unless you know for a fact that that’s the term they use to describe themselves, and that they’re okay with other people using it to talk about them. Someone might seem like a femboy to you, but actually have a different identity, or might have had negative experiences with that term in the past.
