115K views · 1.2K reactions | I started thinking about my dream kitchen when we bought this house 10 years ago and the one thing I KNEW I wanted was a big island that opened up the space more than what we had before (the island used to be turned the other way, much smaller and two-tiered). I wanted this island to be a focal point in our kitchen and be the gathering space for when we entertain…and it works SO well. When I host holidays, it’s so functional because everyone congregates around the island and I’m able to cook at the stove without having to ask people to move 😂. Some people comment that they think it’s weird how my stove is on the opposite wall instead of behind the island, but it works SO well when you have people over. Here are my top 5 decisions that helped to make this island a focal point 🤗 1. Designer stools. Yup, they are really expensive. But they are real leather (wipeable—so easy to clean!) and solid white oak. You can’t beat the quality and the caramel leather looks amazing in the kitchen. 2. A 2 inch mitered edge that is thicker than the standard eased edge counters on the perimeter (Hanstone quartz in Montauk). Some people thought it was weird that we wanted a thicker island counter … not weird. It was all part of the strategy to make the island stand out! 3. Oversized statement pendants. Enough said. They are gorgeous. 4. No visible outlets. If you can, hide those eye sores! Talk to your designer and contractor about different strategies that are available where you live (it varies by your electrical code) 5. Choose an island finish that is different than the perimeter. We chose quarter sawn white oak with a custom stain by @mousercabinetry and it is stunning!!!
