These 20 x 20 x 20 mm aluminium blocks are prototypes for the next generation of 3D-printed lattice structures some of which are already used in the automotive and aerospace industries. Made using a process called 'selective laser melting' these structures are strong and stiff but light. That's good for a lot of things: fuel efficiency for example increases when vehicle parts are lighter. It's the hollow patterns that make them so effective. "You can align patterns to create strength in the Parametric Pattern, Art Structure, Lattice Structure, University Of Nottingham, 3d Printing Industry, Additive Manufacturing, Generative Design, Digital Fabrication, Spaceship Art
