When one-year-old Stuart was discovered, he was chained up and traumatized. The malnourished Bornean orangutan weighed just under 4 kilograms (8.5 pounds), roughly 25 percent less than what he should. Looking to make fast money in the illegal wildlife trade, poachers had orphaned, kidnapped and sold Stuart off as a pet.Rather than living freely in the wild, naturally helping to maintain balance in the Bornean rainforest ecosystem, his sole function had become entertaining humans.
