Sylvie { farmer ⋆ florist } on Instagram: "A simple guide on how we divide our dahlia tubers 🥔✂️ — First we identify the ‘mother tuber’. We snip it off the clump and dispose of it. Mother tubers often rot in the ground during the growing season, if they don’t, often they rot from the inside out and are more susceptible to rot in storage. This isn’t always the case but oftentimes. — We trim the stems back as they can get in the way when dividing tubers. — Next we identify the eyes on the clump. Every tuber must have at least one viable eye to grow a plant next season. Tubers typically have a body (with all of the stored energy the to grow) neck and crown although occasionally tubers can have only a body and crown and still have viable eyes. — If we have two tubers attached together wi
South Moore Garden 🌻 by Catheriya on Instagram: "I have been getting some questions about waking up tubers for cuttings. I’ve been using the baggie method for my tubers because it’s really dry where I live. If I were to pot them up in 4” pots like many others do, leaving the crown exposed, the potting soil would dry out too quickly. With the baggie method, I’ve had 100% success; they usually wake up within a week or so. I placed the bags in an open box and keep them in a warm room; they don’t need light at this stage. Once the sprout reaches the size I want, I carefully wiggle it off and reseal the bag. I completely sealed the bag and have never had issues with rot. I hope this helps. #dahlias #dahlia #cutflowergarden #backyardgarden #dahliagarden #dahliasofinstagram #dahlialove #dahli
South Moore Garden 🌻 by Catheriya on Instagram: "Last winter, I tried my hand at growing dahlias indoors. I wasn’t sure what to expect, many experts warned that without a proper (and costly) greenhouse, dahlias wouldn’t thrive. They told me I might get them to bloom, but the flowers wouldn’t reach normal size, and I’d likely struggle with powdery mildew and other issues. Essentially, they thought it wouldn’t work. But it turned out to be a fun experiment with plenty of learning along the way. I adapted and discovered methods that suited my setup, and I ended up with a tent full of blooms throughout the winter. Pest problems were nonexistent, powdery mildew was minimal, and my plants grew nearly to full size, even in pots. This winter, I plan to double the number of plants, which I’m sur
Liselotte Vince | Hudson Valley Flower Farmer on Instagram: "Tips 3 & 4: Wait for warmth: As spring temperatures rise, the eyes will naturally swell and become much easier to spot. When dividing: Focus on the crown area where the tuber connects to the stem. Look for swelling buds or tiny protrusions—these are the eyes. Make sure each division includes at least one eye. By leaving your clumps intact—or dividing them into halves or quarters—you increase the likelihood of having eyes on each section. Once the eyes are visible, you can safely divide into smaller, plantable pieces. Just like anything new, this takes practice. I still make mistakes dividing tubers, but I’ve gotten better with time and experience. For this reason, I won’t ship tubers until I see a visible eye—it’s my guar
Liselotte Vince | Hudson Valley Flower Farmer on Instagram: "🚨That weird growth is called crown gall and it’s bad news!🚨 This is the first time I’ve come across it on my dahlias. This tuber was new to me this year and purchased from a respectable grower in the US. 🤷‍♀️ Here’s what you need to do ⬇️ Crown gall has no cure for dahlias 😔, and the bacteria (Agrobacterium tumefaciens) can survive in soil for over a year! Here’s how to protect your plants: 🌱 Tubers: Destroy infected ones (don’t compost!) by either burning them or throwing them in the trash. 🛠️ Tools: Sanitize your tools between every plant both when harvesting flowers and when dividing. 🪴 Soil: Rotate crops, solarize, or replace infected soil. Don’t grow dahlias in the same spot for a few years! I’ll be growing
Liselotte Vince | Hudson Valley Flower Farmer on Instagram: "🚨 Breaking Dahlia News 🚨 I wanted to share this with you now so you’re not thinking you’ve got a ton of extra tubers ready to grow next year. 🌱 When you start dividing your tubers, you might notice some growing out of the sides of a tuber that is attached to the main stalk—or even growing from the bottom, like in my video. These are called feeder tubers 🥔❌ And here’s the bad news: * They won’t produce flowers next year. 🌸🚫 * They won’t do anything except take up precious winter storage space. I always cut them off because they’re pretty much…useless. ✂️🗑️ Disappointing, right? 😞 I figured you would want to know NOW so you can focus on the ones that WILL bloom next year. . . . #dahlias #dahliaaddict #dahlialover
NearMe Victoria on Instagram: "Iron Mine Bay is a hidden gem within East Sooke Park, with stunningly clear blue waters and a rugged, peaceful shoreline. The short hike to the bay is a treat, winding through lush coastal forest before revealing this beautiful, secluded spot. It’s perfect for a quiet escape into nature. To get here from Victoria, take Highway 1 west and exit onto Highway 14 (Sooke Road). Follow it for about 17 km, then turn left onto Gillespie Road. Continue onto East Sooke Road and drive for about 9 km until you reach the Aylard Farm parking lot. From there, follow the well-marked trail to Iron Mine Bay or Pike Point. It’s an unforgettable adventure! 📸 @dougclementphotography and Azu #IronMineBay #EastSookePark #HikingAdventures #HiddenGem #VancouverIslandBeaches #Clear
Jenna Meadows | Meadows Flower Farm on Instagram: "Do you need to dig your dahlias up for the winter? I live in garden zone 6a and it’s generally recommended that garden zones 6 and colder dig up their dahlias if you want to keep them safe from rotting in frigid winter soil. Critters like voles may also munch on them. 🐭 My nearby aunt applies a thick layer of mulch to her dahlias and finds some survive the winter! I want to keep as many dahlias as possible (and divide them to have more!) so this is something I do to ensure I can keep all my dahlias. 😊 1. When: I enjoy my blooms as long as possible so I wait for a hard frost! After, cut back all the dead foliage and just leave the stump of the stem. If you live somewhere without a hard frost, you can dig your dahlias 135 days after plant

Jennifer Way - Spring Valley Farm on Instagram: "Here’s how dahlia tuber harvest and storage works at our farm. 🌸I dig the tubers as soon as they are ready. Usually a couple of weeks after a killing frost. By this point I have cut back all the dead foliage and flowers and let them stew in the ground. 🌸I use my favorite plastic black crates for storage. If the ground has been incredible wet, I usually let the tubers sit out during the day to dry off. But we’ve had incredibly dry conditions, so the dirt where I plant the tubers was easily shaken off. When they sit in the crates, I can easily shake more dirt off. 🌸I DO NOT RINSE my dahlias. I don’t. This is not for everyone. But I find the extra dirt coating keeps them hydrated. They are less likely to dry out for me and where I store t
