Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag", published in 1899, became a nation-wide bestseller, played on parlor pianos in people's homes. The first recording of it was made in 1903 and it was popular enough that Miss Alice Roosevelt requested that it be played at a White House reception in 1905.
