在共同住宅的概念之下創立的社區有較強的社區意識。每週一、二次或更多的晚餐時間，社區成員分攤烹飪活動並分享餐食。共同分攤的還包括托兒、園藝等活動，與社區整體的管理，藉此培養社區意識。一般來說，社區的決策皆來自於會員的共識 —— 採納社區所有居民的意見，並基於會員公約作出決策。
在2009年11月的[[紐約周刊]]，其中一篇描述[[紐約市]]首個共同住宅計畫的文章中寫道：公共住宅「能讓人們擁有自己的溫暖窩，但不會和外界疏離，不會感到在冰冷的城市中迷失。」<ref>
