Submission Review Guidelines:

Changes proposed in this Pull Request:

This PR ensures that all labels used in the NOX and NOX in LYS steps are properly localized using WordPress internationalization functions. Previously, these labels were hardcoded and not available for translation, which affected multilingual sites and user experience for non-English speakers.

Closes I18N-264

How to test the changes in this Pull Request:

  • Ensure the code changes are making sense.
  • Perform a smoke test of the NOX onboarding flow. Confirm there are no errors during the process.

📝 Walkthrough

"""

Walkthrough

This update adds internationalization (i18n) support for various user interface strings in the WooCommerce plugin, focusing on alt attributes for images, step labels, iframe titles, and fallback messages. Hardcoded English strings are replaced with localized versions using the WordPress __ translation function and sprintf, enabling translation and localization across multiple components and onboarding steps.

plugins/woocommerce/client/admin/client/launch-your-store/hub/main-content/pages/site-preview.tsx (1)

8-13: Provide translator context for the single-word string

The word “Preview” can be a noun or a verb; giving translators context avoids ambiguity. WordPress i18n has _x() for that purpose.

-import { __ } from '@wordpress/i18n';
+import { __, _x } from '@wordpress/i18n';
...
-    title={ __( 'Preview', 'woocommerce' ) }
+ /* translators: Title attribute for the store preview iframe in Launch Your Store. */
+    title={ _x( 'Preview', 'iframe title', 'woocommerce' ) }

Also applies to: 92-93

plugins/woocommerce/client/admin/client/launch-your-store/hub/main-content/pages/payments-content.tsx (1)

88-92: Alt text should be empty for decorative branding

A purely decorative logo adds audible noise for assistive tech. Prefer an empty alt (or role="presentation") so screen-reader users aren’t forced to hear “Woo Logo” every time.

-   <img
-       src={ `${ WC_ASSET_URL }images/woo-logo.svg` }
-       alt={ __( 'Woo Logo', 'woocommerce' ) }
-   />
+   <img
+       src={ `${ WC_ASSET_URL }images/woo-logo.svg` }
+       alt=""
+       role="presentation"
+   />
plugins/woocommerce/client/admin/client/settings-payments/onboarding/providers/woopayments/components/header/index.tsx (1)

26-30: Decorative logo should have empty alt text

Same accessibility concern as in payments-content.tsx. Logos used only for branding/decoration should not be announced.

-    alt={ __( 'Woo Logo', 'woocommerce' ) }
+    alt=""
+    role="presentation"
plugins/woocommerce/client/admin/client/settings-payments/components/modals/woo-payments-post-sandbox-account-setup-modal.tsx (1)

128-155: Icons are decorative — suppress screen-reader noise

The “store” and “dollar” SVGs convey no information that isn’t already present in the surrounding headings/text. Use empty alt and optionally role="presentation".

-    alt={ __( 'Store icon', 'woocommerce' ) }
+    alt=""
+    role="presentation"
...
-        alt={ __( 'Dollar icon', 'woocommerce' ) }
+        alt=""
+        role="presentation"

This issue existed in both old and new email templates, but became more visible with the new email template system. Learning: In WooCommerce blocks, bold styling for .wc-block-components-product-details__name should be scoped only to the Cart block (.wc-block-cart__main); on the Checkout block, product names are not bold because prices are highlighted instead.

Learning: In WooCommerce transactional emails, product images have historically had display issues due to lazy loading attributes being applied, which email clients cannot process since they don't execute JavaScript. This issue existed in both old and new email templates, but became more visible with the new email template system. The fix involves preventing lazy loading on attachment images specifically during email generation by adding skip classes and data attributes.

File: plugins/woocommerce/src/Internal/Admin/Settings/Payments.php:431-439
Timestamp: 2025-06-17T14:19:30.933Z
Learning: In plugins/woocommerce/src/Internal/Admin/Settings/Payments.php, the process_payment_provider_states() method intentionally filters out payment providers that don't have a _suggestion_id. This is by design to only track state changes for gateways from partner extensions, not core WooCommerce gateways or other installed gateways.

Learning: In WooCommerce projects, formatting suggestions should respect the project's Prettier configuration and linting rules. Changes that would break the lint job should be avoided, even if they appear to improve readability.

Learning: In plugins/woocommerce/client/admin/client/settings-payments/components/other-payment-gateways/other-payment-gateways.tsx, the user vladolaru prefers to keep the current setUpPlugin function signature with optional positional context parameter rather than refactoring to an options object or making context required.

Timestamp: 2025-06-26T14:56:54.917Z
Learning: In WooCommerce payments onboarding components (like plugins/woocommerce/client/admin/client/settings-payments/onboarding/providers/woopayments/steps/payment-methods-selection/index.tsx), when updating local React state based on API calls, the local state should only be updated after the API call succeeds to prevent inconsistent state if the save operation fails. The pattern is to move setPaymentMethodsState calls inside the .then() callback of the API promise.

Timestamp: 2025-06-20T13:08:44.017Z
Learning: For WooCommerce Payments onboarding step tracking in useEffect hooks, only include the active step in the dependency array, not the context object. The sessionEntryPoint is static throughout the onboarding session and tracking should only fire on actual step navigation, not context changes.

Timestamp: 2025-06-13T13:37:35.793Z
Learning: In plugins/woocommerce/client/blocks/assets/js/blocks/checkout/inner-blocks/checkout-shipping-address-block/customer-address.tsx, the shouldAnimate flag is expected to be false only on initial render and may remain true after the first edit; it does not need to be reset.

Learning: In WooCommerce blocks, when porting existing code patterns that have known issues (like parseInt truncating decimal money values), maintain consistency with existing implementation rather than making isolated fixes. The preference is for systematic refactoring approaches (like broader Dinero adoption) over piecemeal changes.

Learning: In WooPayments onboarding flows, vladolaru prefers to handle error tracking on the backend rather than frontend when API calls like disableWooPaymentsTestAccount() fail.

Thanks for making the changes, Cvetan. Approving it.

PS: CodeRabbit has some interesting nitpicks about not using an alt for decorative elements to make it more friendly for screen-readers. Maybe you can validate that that is a good a11y approach and remove the alts and add the roles.

Thanks, Vlad! I looked into it, and it turns out that using an empty alt attribute with role="presentation" is perfectly valid HTML. It helps screen readers skip decorative images and reduces unnecessary noise. TIL.
