Oates, BBC Studios' head of continuing drama, said there is a lot of homophobia in society, and that she hopes the broadcaster's flagship soap can be instrumental in bringing about change.

Oates has held a series of ascending leadership roles since she began her career as a senior scientist for Glaxo Inc.

It's testament to the fact Hall & Oates music transcends generations.

Hall and Oates made their Irish debut with a show in Dublin's Olympia Theatre in March 2014 which was then released as a live DVD and album.

Hall and Oates play Birmingham on April 24, Wembley on April 26, Manchester on April 28 and Glasgow on May 1.
