In its 14-page complaint, Hispalinux said Windows 8 contained an "obstruction mechanism" called UEFI Secure Boot that controls the start-up of the computer and means users must seek keys from Microsoft to install another operating system.

The Linux Foundation has released software that will allow Linux to work with computers running the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) firmware, which all Windows 8 machines do.

As a security measure, Windows 8 uses the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) instead of the older BIOS software that earlier PCs used to control basic system functions.

"A number of new features and technologies make their debut on the AMD platform, including Ultra Durable 5 technology, Dual UEFI 3D Bios, digital power delivery, triple display support and Lucid Virtu MVP," commented Tim Handley, the deputy director of Motherboard Marketing at Gigabyte.
