the final poster.
My intent was to work with the layout of the text within the building architecture.
hierarchy week 2.
My first focus was on using text structurally, but pulling in the visual aspects of Greiman and her work. I played with using the text to almost construct a building, but bring in the almost overwhelming at points aspect of some of Greiman's work.
week iteration 1.
My focus was on the overlapping of images that I had first connected with Greiman. I brought the text in secondary and just tried to work with the layering of the text and images.
week iteration 2.
My focus was to make the text work with the architecture of the building but attempting to replace parts of the building with text. I also tried to add some more dimension in my text by trying to work with the dimensionality of the building edges. With the imagery I moved more away from the bold overlapping images.
week iteration 3.
My focus was to bring the architecture of the building to the typography. I tested having the secondary text make interesting forms with her name. I also experimented with using a different typeface for her name to help bring more emphasis to her name, as well as visual difference to the straight edged building architecture.
week iteration 4.
This layout focus was on the way the the buildings came together to make the architecture more interesting. I also attempted to incorporate the text to run better with the building to add dimension and move away from the flat levels of the text on image.
my growth/final statement
I first connected with April Greiman and her work back when
I started researching her. It’s rare for me to feel some kind of bond with
someone, let alone be it with someone via research. The first obvious
connection is Greiman having graduated from KCAI. We have a similar taste for
images to overlap, the need to tell a story and bring in all the important
aspects. Greiman believes that “all form is content.” This is one of the ideas
that I fully embrace. Design is not just simply made without reason, each piece
holds a particular piece to the overall message. Design is not just there, it
is fully backed by reason, which is the way it should be – otherwise design
would simply be art.
A few of the concepts that I have taken from Greiman revolve
around the further advancement of my design skills. I knew going into this
semester that typography is something that I struggle with. Then with this
project add in busy overlapping imagery and my struggles expanded. I had
realized prior to the start of this project that I can work separately with
typography and imagery well, but together it can often appear as if I don’t
know design at all. With that knowledge the way that I had looked at projects
was type and image, not type with image/image with type. I had viewed it as two
separate objects, which is represented in my early designs for this project; my
pieces were flat two, simply text on image. The further that my design
iterations went, the more that the text and image started to work with each
other, using one to continue the idea expressed in the other.
