Five

And just like that our youngest turned five!
A bundle of energy, a bundle of fun all wrapped into one sweet boy.

So proud of his pirate monkey cake!

Having his cousins and grandparents over for a pirate themed part was so much fun!

You enjoyed every minute of your special day.

Happy birthday and may all your days be blessed!
We love you to the moon and back!

Summer Reflections

We grew up a bit this summer.  There has been a lot of time for reflection.  I'm remembering all the older church ladies saying, "Enjoy it.  It goes so fast."  I remember thinking with panic, "I'm trying to enjoy it.  What should I do different?"  Our days are numbered.  Will we have our child for a day?  A lifetime?  What does it look like when they no longer live at home?
How do we balance the daily grind and sit and watch them grow?
We have today.

Wedding Memories

It was such a pretty day.
So fun to see everyone all "gussied up."

Mascara for the first time.

Brothers helping each other.

It started with the two of us.....

The groom at home before we left for church.

Playing cards with Grandma while waiting for the car to leave.

Waiting and trying to stay clean.....

And they're married!!!

The Big Day

July was a very busy month!  After our beach vacation, we spent the next four weeks preparing for one of the biggest moments of our lives:  the marriage of our oldest son!  We hosted the rehearsal dinner at our home.  The girls and I had a wonderful time planning and making the decorations.
Everyone had a relaxing time.
Just what the bride and groom had ordered!

The wedding day was very peaceful.  Everything went smoothly.
We will treasure this day in our hearts forever!
We are so thrilled for Dan and Colleen and so blessed to have a precious new daughter in our lives.  We are so excited to watch their family bloom and grow!

Beach Trip - Last Family Vacation

In June we had our last official family vacation.
Our oldest was one month away from his wedding day.
We had a lovely time at the beach with some of our extended family.

These two spent their days catching crabs.

The weather was chilly and rainy most days.
The boys enjoyed a lot of fishing.

We are so excited for Dan as he starts his own family!

Buggy

This spring we found four praying mantis egg cases in our bushes.
Several years ago we ordered two egg cases and hatched a gazillion mantises.
We're pretty sure these new ones are descendants of that first batch.

We hung a couple of them on the screen porch.

At the end of May, they made their debut.

It is fascinating to see them emerge.
They were yellow at first.

They pour out.  Too many to count!

We released them all over the yard.

It's been fun to spy them scattered in the flower beds.
They are green now and have tripled in size.

A Tribute to the Sport of Ultimate

It's the sport that hooked our family.

It's our 15th anniversary of playing...

There's a long history behind this.
Eighteen years ago my husband taught a group of homeschool dads and children how to play Ultimate Frisbee at a homeschool camp-out.  He had played intramural Frisbee in college.  We were newly pregnant with our third child.  Our two oldest were pre-school and toddler aged.  The older homeschool kids started playing ultimate at every gathering.  A couple of the dads with older children decided to start a league.  When our kids were old enough, around 7-8 years, they began playing in a junior league.

The whole thing stuck.

It's not Frisbee golf.

It's a sport that's growing rapidly.

When your kids are obsessed with a sport and have played it at a variety of levels, junior leagues, high school teams, select teams, college DI and DIII, and semi-professional teams, you grow weary of trying to explain what it is.  You keep it close to your heart and realize that a lot of people don't recognize this sport.  Oh well!

It's brought joy and togetherness to our family.

I love watching my kids play sports!

They have played on teams with best friends and cousins.

Cheering them on in wind, rain and snow!

The sport came full swing.  The homeschool kids started a competitive team at our alma mater.

We love all sports.  Soccer has a warm place in our hearts, too.
However, no other sport has swept us away to more places than Ultimate.
Collectively our kids have played in 16 states and one foreign country.

It has been a joy to pack up our 15 passenger van with teens and head to a tournament.

Crazy?  Probably.
Worth it?  Yes.
