It begins

What a strange title for a blog, I'll be thinking of a better one at some point. Here are some things to add in the near term.

Mostly I'll be talking about the following:

-Cool linux stuff - mythTV, boring server stuff, random slashdot articles.

-SBS 2003 - I have to admit that I like this server a great deal-we just 'swing migrated' our old SBS server to new hardware and it was quite fun with bouts of frustration.

-Physics - hey it's what I teach and there are some sweet resources out there on the web, most recently I've been playing with the phet.colorado.edu physics simulations. Verry nice.

-Rails - While last year I felt all cool using ruby on rails, now everyone and their mother seems to be into it, oh well. It still is the most fun I've had programming and I'm never going back to PHP.

-Education - the majority of my job is being the tech director at a small private school. How else would I know about the wide world of mySpace, content filtering and viral web videos. Additionally there is all sorts of nice (and often free) programs out there. I'm currently looking at University of Washington's Presenter system and it could be pretty chill.

-Someday soon I'll have the complete linux/squid/dansguardian/winbind/LDAPgroup/server2003 tutorial. Sound confusing??? yup but hey it was entirely free (if I don't value my time :) ) Of course server2003 costs money but it works just as well with a samba server. Not too much unexpected but there was a lot to configure.

-WSS (windows sharepoint services) this system rocks for getting non-tech people on the web making websites easily and they look pretty decent as well. We got our entire faculty up on sharepoint this year and we've had very few tech support calls, beware of frontpage though... it can bite a sharepoint site pretty hard.

-Tablets - hey, why be a laptop school when you can be a tablet school? We're still working on an answer to that one but they don't cost much more and there's something fun about writing on the screen. If you have a tablet, make sure that you check out some of the add on packs like the education pack, experience pack etc. I particularly like the physics illustrator, inkArt and the crossword puzzles.

-And of course there are other fun things to talk about too, like Hamachi the slickest VPN idea I've seen, oh and that's free too.
