Laboran won the high jump event at the inaugural Papua New Guinea National Championships, held in Lae on 6 October 1962, with a leap of 1.90 m. He went on to win this event for the next three years. The following year, Laboran was part of the maiden Papua New Guinean team to compete at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, where he finished 11th in the high jump clearing the bar at 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m).
