- Nyau, auch Nyao (bantu, in der Grundbedeutung „Initiation“, in anderen Übersetzungen auch Maske) ist ein Geheimbund der Chewa, eines Bantu-Volks aus Südostafrika. Der Geheimbund besteht ausschließlich aus Männern, die zuvor in einem Ritus in die Geheimnisse des Nyau-Bundes eingeführt, also initiiert werden müssen. Das Wort Nyau wird von Außenstehenden nicht nur für den Geheimbund an sich, sondern auch für die Tänzer, ihren rituellen Tanz, ihre Masken und Tiergestalten benutzt. Nyau verschwindet mit zunehmender Verwestlichung und wird mittlerweile vielerorts als Volkstanz betrachtet. Dies stimmt sicherlich nicht, sondern es ist vielmehr ein religiöser Tanz, der als Kommunikationsweg zwischen den Menschen und der Ahnenwelt angesehen werden sollte. Die wichtigste Tätigkeit der Nyau-Mitglieder ist es, an Begräbnissen, Gedenkfeiern und Pubertätsinitiationen (bei Mädchen: ) maskiert zu tanzen. Jeder Tänzer stellt mit seiner Maske einen bestimmten Charakter oder ein bestimmtes Tier dar. Auch wenn einige andere Stämme ähnliche Geheimgesellschaften und Tänze entwickelt haben (einige Nguni, Yao und ), kann der Nyau-Kult der Chewa als Ursprung angesehen werden, weshalb sich der Artikel nur auf diesen bezieht. La confrérie Nyau rassemble les initiés adeptes de la cosmogonie correspondante. Les rites des hommes et des femmes sont distincts, ainsi que les savoirs dispensés, en accord avec le genre et l'ancienneté des personnes. Le terme Nyau n'est pas seulement utilisé pour la société elle-même, mais aussi pour désigner les croyances religieuses relatives, les danses rituelles et les masques utilisés à l'occasion de ces danses. Les sociétés Nyau opèrent au niveau du village, mais font partie d'un vaste réseau qui concerne la zone centrale et une partie des régions méridionales du Malawi, l'est de la Zambie, l'ouest du Mozambique et les zones du Zimbabwe où se trouvent des immigrés venus du Malawi. À l'occasion des mascarades (au sens premier de spectacle des masques), on peut voir les femmes et les enfants se réfugier dans les maisons lorsque le Nyau se fait menaçant. Le porteur du masque, nécessairement un homme, a l'occasion de représenter le pouvoir et le savoir masculins dans une société traditionnellement matrilinéaire, ainsi que l'incarnation de l'esprit d'un défunt. En tant qu'esprits, les porteurs de masque peuvent agir impunément et, dans le passé, il y eut des agressions et des morts durant certaines cérémonies. - Nyau (also: Nyao meaning mask or initiation) is a secret society of the Chewa, an ethnic group of the Bantu peoples from Central and Southern Africa. The Nyau society consists of initiated members of the Chewa and Nyanja people, forming the cosmology or indigenous religion of the people. Initiations are separate for men and for women, with different knowledge learned and with different ritual roles in the society according to gender and seniority. Only initiates are considered to be mature and members of the Nyau. The word Nyau is not only used for the society itself, but also for the indigenous religious beliefs or cosmology of people who form this society, the ritual dance performances, and the masks used for the dances. Nyau societies operate at the village level, but are part of a wide network of Nyau across the central and part of the southern regions of Malawi, eastern Zambia, western Mozambique and areas where Malawians migrated in Zimbabwe. During performances with the masks women and children often rush into the houses when a Nyau performer threatens, as the masks are worn by only male members of the society and represent male knowledge. At that moment in the performance and rituals, Nyau masked dancers are understood to be spirits of the dead. As spirits the masquerades may act with impunity and there have been attacks and deaths during performances in the past. Increasing westernization has led to a decrease in Nyau. (en)
