- The Painted Bird is a 1965 novel by Jerzy Kosiński that describes World War II as seen by a boy, considered a "Gypsy or Jewish stray," wandering about small villages scattered around an unspecified country in Central and Eastern Europe. The story was originally described by Kosiński as autobiographical, but upon its publication by Houghton Mifflin he announced that it was a purely fictional account. The book describes the wandering boy's encounters with peasants engaged in all forms of sexual and social deviance such as incest, bestiality, and rape, and in other forms of extreme violence and lust. The book's title was drawn from an incident in the story. The boy, while in the company of a professional bird catcher, observes how the man took one of his captured birds and painted it several colors. Then he released the bird to fly in search of a flock of its kin, but when the painted bird came upon the flock, they saw it as an intruder and viciously attacked the bird until it fell from the sky. - De geverfde vogel (oorspronkelijke titel The Painted Bird) is een controversiële oorlogsroman van de Amerikaanse schrijver Jerzy Kosinski. De roman werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1965. De Nederlandse vertaling, van de hand van , verscheen in 1966 bij de Bezige Bij. De latere drukken, met een uitgebreid voorwoord van de auteur, zijn in een vertaling door Oscar Timmers. Kosinski is van joods-Poolse afkomst. Toch duurde het tot 1989 voordat de eerste Poolse vertaling verscheen onder de naam Malowany Ptak bij uitgeverij Czytelnik. 'De geverfde vogel' gaat over een jongen die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, van zijn zesde tot zijn elfde jaar, rondzwerft over het Poolse platteland. De titel verwijst naar een vogelhandelaar, bij wie de jongen enige tijd onderdak vindt. Soms beschildert hij een gevangen vogel met felle kleuren, waarna de vogel vrijgelaten wordt bij zijn soortgenoten. Die herkennen de geverfde vogel niet en verstoten hem, desnoods met geweld. (nl)
