See sections

[edit]

Hey, it's great to see you taking an interest in the Wikivoyage:Country surgeon Expedition! I think that Expedition is really important, but has been pretty neglected (probably since there is so much other stuff going on). Your work on Vietnam#See in particular is really nice! --Peter Talk 19:14, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Peter :-) I've always taken an interest in that expedition (only I edited as user:Justme back on WT), as I agree it's really quite important. It's a pity it seems to have been forgotten, but well, there's so much going on indeed. Let's just hope the other expedition members will find some time to write the sections they signed up for at some point. In any case, nice of you to drop a line. JuliasTravels (talk) 20:11, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh right, I forgot you were Justme ;) There were a good number of name changes in the process of the migration, and I occasionally forget who was who! --Peter Talk 04:43, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Recreating articles

[edit]

Hi, which articles do you mean exactly? Malmesbury (Wiltshire) and Pals to start? Definitely will need to set a fixed list of articles. Maybe just in your userspace or something. Thanks again for taking the time to write up all this. -- torty3 (talk) 11:48, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sure, although it might make sense to take somewhat larger batches of articles (at least 10 or so), so I won't have to ask you to delete a new one daily ;-) I don't intend to make full articles out of all of them (considering that there were ~450), so they will typically not take too much time. My userspace is fine, something like User:JuliasTravels/Skeleton recreation? JuliasTravels (talk) 12:00, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yep, I just was wondering whether you wanted to choose which and how many articles to work on first. Should I just go ahead and pick a list? We could similarly limit it to a particular continent, or go by size. -- torty3 (talk) 12:18, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Whatever is easier for you :-) Please go ahead. JuliasTravels (talk) 12:21, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, what would be easier for me would be for you to get buttons :) Particularly after the sad tidings, though it really depends on far down the rabbit hole you want to travel. Oh wait a minute. I see a whole bunch of recent changes! -- torty3 (talk) 10:58, 4 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Julia, I have nominated you for an admin. I am sure you would be a great one and the delete button would be a help for you in your effort of recreation of skeleton articles. You are doing great job. --Danapit (talk) 11:00, 4 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sindh

[edit]

Hi جولیس (Julias), thanks for copy-editing the article. Very appreciated. But you inserted new red-links under "Other destinations" section, but unfortunately I won't be able to start articles on those destinations because none of them deserve a separate article and better be mentioned in nearby cities articles. Don't you think they better be removed otherwise we will have a bunch more empty articles and I'm suer they'll remain empty for many years to come until our neglected government not start investing in those areas. On the other hand, you changed usable status to outline, You know better then me so I won't complain but my concern is that outline region template reads "This region article is an outline and needs more content. It has a template, but there is not enough information present." although the article itself is very detailed and as full as a guide region article should be, but I know this article deserve outline template as of now until the destination articles not promoted to usable status, but this template can confuse a newbie. No? --Saqib (talk) 23:06, 28 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Saqib, I'm just copy-editing a bit. You did great work on the article! You're actually right about the message. It might be worth discussing the text of the region status template at the relevant page, to also mention the sub-articles. For a region to be usable, at least the most important cities and other destinations should be usable. That's a fair rule: you can't visit a whole region with our articles as guide if there are only listings for 1 or 2 places. For a region as big as Sindh, I'd say that means at least 4 or 5 cities and 1 or 2 other destinations - in any case more than now. As for the red links, don't worry. The overview of important destinations is information in itself. It's not your personal responsibility to write up all the Pakistan articles, so don't think I'm trying to give you work. :-) I was in doubt about the other destinations too. If you have better ideas for where to redirect, that would be great. In case of the lake area, for example: the lake itself doesn't get an article but that area seems to be a tourist area with resorts, or not? I'm not sure under which municipality or so it falls. The park should get its own article, I think, but maybe we can make the hill station a broader article, maybe for that mountain range area or something? Any ideas on where it can be redirected? In any case, it shows up on all the top destination lists I find for Pakistan, so we should probably point interested travellers to some relevant article and include some get in and sleep info there, don't you think? JuliasTravels (talk) 00:29, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
G'day Julias. Definitely, I'll bring all the largest cities and other important destination of Sindh to usable or guide status before switching the Sindh outline template back at guide status, but better the region article templates should be altered. I know you're not giving me work but frankly speaking, actually I've a long-term mission to improve every article comes under Pakistan hierarchy in the long run and I wish if I would able to achieve my mission to some extent sometime soon before I get bored of WV and decides to retire as many did and do. So back to topic, you're right these other destinations in Sindh are popular but still they're not much developed. The local government of Sindh doesn't seems very keen to promote the tourism actually thus no proper places to sleep even in one of the county's largest national park. As far I know there was not a single place where you can spend a night in the lakes and in hill station you're referring to above. But I may be wrong as well, its a long time now since I've not been to those places. But I definitely have plans to visit all those places soon so that I gather the information about the current state of the sites. I think it would be better if we redirect all those red links to nearby major cities and remove the redirected links from article until the articles not significantly written otherwise, I think I'll never be able to bring Sindh to guide status because its other destination article's will still lack content in sections such as Eat, Drink, Sleep thus remain outline. I think we can write in detail about these places in Sindh sub-region articles until their own article not created. Let me know what do you think. --Saqib (talk) 13:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I think it's perfectly fine to be flexible. When there's only few listings, we can either create a short article, include information in a nearby city article or consider creating sub-regional articles with listings for the scattered facilities and sites in an area. I think the main point of a good guide article is that it's complete: for some places that means loads of information, but in other places there are only so many things to mention. No reason a place should not get guide status because there's noting to list. I'm not sure what you mean by "proper" accommodation. We shouldn't really judge the quality of accommodation, I guess: in some parks there are only a few basic campgrounds but they still pass the "can you sleep there" test. Kirthak has basic accommodation, jeep tracks and it offers guides and tours. For many nature enthusiasts, that's more than enough ;-) As for the lake area, there seems to be a big plan to create a proper, fancy new resort there, but if there's nothing more than plans now, a redirect with information in the other article is a good idea. I don't see why we should remove the red links though. Red links are not always bad. As I said before, it's information in itself to give people ideas, and it also provides a structure of which basic things we still need to cover. I'll try and write up some information if I can find it. So we'll redirect the lake area and the hill station to the subregion articles of Sindh then? Or somewhere else? JuliasTravels (talk) 14:10, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'll follow your advice. I noticed you recently expanded a Dutch national park article so you know better how a national park article can be written. Btw, wondering are you actually from Netherlands? Yes, you're right there're plans to develop both the lake and hill station areas but I don't know when the development will actually start but until then, that hill station and lake areas certainly not merit articles on their own and thanks for bothering to do search about these places. You know I'm very flexible and I agree with you to keep the red-links but as redirects links. I'll redirect the Keenjhar Lake article to Thatta because very near to Thatta and Gorakh Hill to Dadu because the hills comes under the jurisdiction of Dadu District. Btw, it will be more appreciate if you keep concentration on copyediting the content I add to articles. --Saqib (talk) 14:30, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what you mean :-) You'd prefer if I only c/e things you write instead of actually creating content myself? JuliasTravels (talk) 14:34, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
NO. I meant you're most welcome to add content yourself, but it will more appreciated if you can give copyediting more priority than adding the content. --Saqib (talk) 14:38, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, I find creating content a lot more interesting than copy/editing, but I'm happy to do a bit of both :-) I can't really see where you add information unless I have an article on my watchlist. I'm also not a native speaker, I just fix what I can. However, feel free to point out places you'd like some eyes on and I'll give it a go. Cheers! JuliasTravels (talk) 14:42, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you're right. You can't notice where I add the content, but I'll let you know anyway. Currently, get in, buy and eat sections of Sindh article need copyediting so whenever you feel free, please have a look at it. And even though, you're not native English speaker, but your English is good and a lot better then me. Anyway, bye for now. --Saqib (talk) 14:46, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wikivoyage:Votes_for_deletion#Taxila

[edit]

Hi Julias. Since you said "Once it's more or less ready to go into mainspace, we can decide if it's reasonable to delete the old version and post your draft as a brand new article." So I thought of letting you know that my draft is ready (though is not yet completed) to go into main namespace but IK and Pashley are not in favour of deleting the existing copy just because it was created a long before. So I thought of asking you of your stance on it. Are you in favour of keeping antique article or should we delete the existing copy and replace with mine for the sake of SEO. Taxila is definitely a most visited and important site of Pakistan and having an article without WT footer will give us good SEO. On a related note: I created Mohenjo-daro from scratch last year with no WT footer and so far the article got 10,000+ page hits whereas biggest cities of Pakistan (Lahore and Islamabad) both still have less than 6,500 page hits just because they've WT footer. --Saqib (talk) 05:54, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think your idea to move it is a good one, better yet like Powers said out of the main namespace. I think it's different from Mohenjodaro because the footer was changed, but if it's completely rewritten it seems silly to leave a footer saying its copied. I changed my vote to archive and replace. Nice work on the new Taxila article! :-) JuliasTravels (talk) 12:59, 26 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Explanation for undo edit

[edit]

Hi User:JuliasTravels , my undo edit on Nederland_(Texas) should have added an explanation in the history. Basically we want to discourage this contributor from adding edits (especially like this) as per Wikivoyage:User_ban_nominations/Archive#Telstra_vandal . We have agreed to block the contributor whenever they appear. Thanks! Andrewssi2 (talk) 00:58, 9 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey Andrewssi2, my undo actually had an explanation, but I'm happy to explain some more :-) I'm aware of the Telstra drama and the frustration. If you're sure it's him, indeed consensus says you can block him right away. I don't personally agree with all decisions in the Telstra story, or with the idea to delete all his edits regardless of their content, but if that's what others want then so be it. In the Nederland case however, he added legitimate sights. Not just random demographics, or random edits in an established article, but the main sights (albeit not properly listed) in an otherwise empty article. I just don't agree that's useless. If other new users added those, we wouldn't delete because they're not properly listed yet either. That's why I undid the delete to fix the listings. I'll expand the article some more in the coming days. I'm not saying you were wrong to delete, but any consensus to block this user should not forbid others to occasionally fix added content rather than delete it. That's all I did. Thanks! JuliasTravels (talk) 10:31, 9 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi User:JuliasTravels, I actually meant that my undo should have had an explanation when I made it. No problem about your edit at all. Hope that clears it up :) --Andrewssi2 (talk) 23:52, 9 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Haha, okay, that clears things up indeed :-) Explanation is always good, but as you might have understood from my above comment, I was aware of why you did it. So no problem. Thanks, JuliasTravels (talk) 09:33, 10 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Your suggestions for Hotel Proposals

[edit]

Thank you for your feedback, and the way you worded it makes perfect sense. Although I am biased I feel all of the PH hotels are exceptional, but you are right they are rather general. I will work on that.

I just posted one for an area north of Paris let me know if you feel this is more inline with what you were thinking. I hope it doesn't sound to much like we are touting. Any additional feedback is appreciated. VerbInteractive (talk) 14:36, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

What I rather meant, was to use the actual listings format and include the addresses, lat/long, url, phonenumber and prices. Unfortunately, you cannot use the descriptions from the hotel websites or advertisements you've used before. Firstly because they typically contain flowery promotional language, but also because of copyright regulations. Region articles like Picardy don't get individual listings for hotels or restaurants. If an establishment is in a town that doesn't yet exist, you are allowed to create it. If the town is too small to have an article, the listing can be placed in the nearest destination article. Perhaps you may want to have a look at Wikivoyage:Words to avoid. It's not a strict ban of these words, but it gives a rough idea. Best, JuliasTravels (talk) 15:01, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dumaguete

[edit]

Firstly, may I thank you for all the great edits you've made over the years, both here and elsewhere Julia?

It's a while since I've been to Dgt, but when I was last there, there were actually THREE different information offices. With this edit you correctly geo-tagged the one in the city centre park near the children's playground and opposite the belltower, but did you realise that the existing text that you left of "In a park, surrounded by a market area" probably referred to the much more northerly office in EJ Blanco Drive, some kilometres away? --Ttcf (talk) 20:45, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for catching that, Ttcf. I was wrong, but actually the other way around. I added the address and hours, thinking indeed that it was the one at EJ Blanco Drive. The geo-coordinates were already there though, and clearly haven't checked them correctly. It seems the office in the centre was intended. Perhaps there's a park there too? I'll undo my edit. I understand, and if the community wants to, we can surely use the banner you proposed. However, it's perfectly possible to use a different one than other Wikivoyage sites do. There have been a few concerns expressed here, so it's best to just address those. In a few days we can make a decision. In any case, thank you for taking the interest. Eivissa

[edit]

Your reverts on Evissa, could you please explain it? --Vadim Shlyakhov (talk) 16:24, 27 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

OK, from w:Ibiza (town)

Although called Ibiza in English and Spanish, the official name is the Catalan Eivissa (as restored in 1986) and its inhabitants call it the Vila d'Eivissa or simply Vila ("Town").

Besides that from my point of view it's good to differentiate the city from the island. I'd bet when people hear "Ibiza" they think about the island. -- Vadim Shlyakhov (talk) 16:31, 27 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi,Vadim Shlyakhov. I left an edit summary, and also just left a note on the article talk page, so please join in the discussion there. While Eivissa is indeed the official name of the city, Wikivoyage usually uses the English name of a place, when there is one. Ibiza city or Ibiza town is, to my knowledge, well-known, so I'm not sure we want to opt for the Catalan name here - but I'm not an expert so others should give their opinions too. However, even when we do want to change to Eivissa, it's important to never simply copy and paste the text and then create a redirect. When you do that, you break the history of the article, and therefore also the copyright of the authors of that text. So, if others agree with you that the name should be Eivissa, we should move the article with its history to the Eivissa page. Finally, both the island and the city are called Eivissa, right? If that's correct, then we should also make a difference between the two. Hope that explains. JuliasTravels (talk) 16:37, 27 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

It just seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy sometimes, when we approach ip-users like that because their edits, even when not all that bad and so irregular over the years, resemble a user we're frustrated by. Good chance they will not respond, and that only fuels our frustrations and conviction. However, you might well be right and then the situation is hopeless to begin with. All the best to you too! Hi, JuliasTravels,
Perhaps it would be more useful for discussion, for editors to see live example of Climate data,
instead of removing tables?
D.Nino (talk) 14:37, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi D.Nino, the table is clearly visible on the discussion page and I've added a link in my comment on that talk page also. The one on Las Palmas is still live, if you want to show an example. One example on a low traffic article is alright - but it's our policy not to introduce new templates to multiple developed articles while they are still experimental. Since all the history versions are saved, it's easy enough to put them back if you do get a consensus for your proposal. JuliasTravels (talk) 14:48, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Administrator status (Official Notice)

[edit]

Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.

As such, we will be removing your administrator flag on February 16, 2022. Should you wish to retain your status, simply come on back and make an edit! That resets the clock. And if you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.

Your removal is along with several other admins as discussed here.

Your status has been changed to autopatroller. If you'd like to resume work as an admin any time, just let us know and we'll be happy to restore your admin flags. Either way, I hope you're having a wonderful life! Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:09, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
