Suku Azerbaijan
Suku Azerbaijan (bahasa Azerbaijan: Azərbaycanlılar, آذربایجانلیلار) adalah sebuah suku bangsa Turkik yang terutama mendiami daerah Azerbaijan di Iran barat laut dan Republik Azerbaijan. Mayoritas dari mereka beragama Islam Syiah.[44] Mereka merupakan suku bangsa terbesar di Republik Azerbaijan dan suku bangsa terbesar kedua di Iran dan Georgia.[47] Mereka menuturkan bahasa Azerbaijan, yang tergolong ke dalam cabang Oghuz dari rumpun bahasa Turkik.

Setelah Perang Rusia–Persia tahun 1813 dan 1828, wilayah-wilayah Iran Qajar di kawasan Kaukasus diserahkan kepada Kekaisaran Rusia dan Perjanjian Gulistan pada tahun 1813 dan Perjanjian Turkmenchay pada tahun 1828 menyelesaikan urusan perbatasan antara Rusia dan Iran.[48][49] Setelah lebih dari 80 tahun berada di bawah kekuasaan Kekaisaran Rusia di kawasan Kaukasus, Republik Demokratik Azerbaijan didirikan pada tahun 1918 yang menentukan wilayah Republik Azerbaijan modern.

The latest figures estimate the Azerbaijani population at 24% of Iran’s 70 million inhabitants (NVI 2003/2004: 301). This means that there are between 15 and 20 million Azerbaijanis in Iran.
