Moscow Conservatory

On 2nd October I was lucky to get tickets to concert of Nigel Kennedy, British violist. So here is my short report about gorgeous building and talented musician.
The building of conservatory at Nikitskaya street was opened on the 7 (20) April 1901. The building was designed by architect V. Zagorsky. Organ Cavaille-Coll (1899) was regarded as one of the best in the world during the Paris exhibition of 1900.

During the First World War (1915 – 1917) the Great Hall hosted a hospital, and from 1924 to 1933, during the daytimes the Hall was used as a popular movie theatre. At 1940 Conservatory was named after russian composer P. Tchaikovsky. International festivals and competitions take place in the Great Hall, and among them  is the famous Tchaikovsky Competition.

Great Hall  is considered  the most favorite music hall in Moscow due to its acoustics, location and decoration.
Site of the conservatory (in Enlish).
Nigel Kennedy performed Bach in the first part of the concert, his own compositions in the second one and popular melodies in the last part of the show. I wished the first part to last forever.

Orchestra in Archangelskoe

My Georgian brother arrived to Moscow and I decided to show him my favorite estate and green place 20 km from the city, Archangelskoe. The mansion (beginning of 18century) belonged to dynasty of prince Galitzine.

The orchestra was playing marches, bringing us back to the old times and inspiring for small dance. You see the reflection of the main prince's building in the windows of the temporary construction behind the musicians.

And a bit of march music today for you, too.

Wiki about Archangelskoe.

Marketing

Last week I was at the exhibition in "Manezh" exhibition ground. I promise to do separate post about Manezh, its history and present. Meanwhile I go on with the exhibition.

The huge exhibition hall, packed with the paintings, was almost empty, though the exposition was intensified by the program, which included invited guests - famous Moscow theater performers, painting workshops, concerts of classical music. That was the moment when I came to the hall and made this photo. The piano was playing Mozart, everybody was listening. Few were watching the paintings.

Clever marketing. I like the idea. Today we have some music, too.
Classical music (Rachmaninov's piano concerto #2), and pop music (their name is "The Viagra").

Enjoy!

Russian Jazz for Charity

Today you can see the photo from charity jazz concert aiming to help the Moscow children's oncology center. The treasures of Russian jazz were playing live for 4,5 hours and it was great Saturday evening for me.

The ladies at the photo above were collecting folk songs in Russian villages and arranged them in jazz and neofunk style. Let me introduce "Zventa Sventana".
Here they are.

PS. These weeks I will probably not be able to visit your blogs on everyday basis, work projects will take most of my time. But I will try to do my best and to combine real and virtual activity).

PPS. By the way, I have checked our stats. The most visited post of 3 years life of "Moscow Daily Photo" is "Texture in green". Which gave me two ideas.
One. If you want to increase the number of visitors, do not think too much about the post naming. Short and simple. Fantasy, singularity and inspiration do not work here).
Two. I hoped that the search word will be "Moscow". Or even "Moscow Daily Photo blog". Or "Best photos from Moscow". Silly and vain me)))...

Musician

This man was playing guitar at Arbat street few days ago. He was so absorbed in eliciting gentle sounds from his amazing guitar that I did not find courage to disturb that meditation and ask questions.
But Google knows everything, so here we are. His name is Sergey Sadov, he is professional musician, this guitar was made on his request. He saw and heard it in his dream... (link to story about musician and his guitar (in Rus))

And video I found at Youtube. He composes music and names his style Psychedelic Alternative Classicism:

One Year Here

Two days ago I was at jazz concert in small Moscow jazz club. Too dark for photos (at least for my camera and my photo-knowledge), so I started looking for any interesting angle or unexpected detail.
Here we are. The reflection of the singing musician in the glass column. Sorry for the noise.
Chin-chin!

One more thing. I joined the community and Moscow blog exactly one year ago, on 18th November 2009.

One year later I have so many more friends all over the world;
I read and understood almost all of 186 pages of my "Canon G10" manual;
I discovered and enjoyed the unknown places in the city which I loved and thought that I knew so well;
I realized that blogging is all about fun and socializing;
I have the feeling that
Eagan, Brattleboro, Barcelona, Fort Lauderdale, Hawaii, Jerusalem, Roma, Menton Boston, Helsinki, Mexico city, Athens, Ocala, Santa Fe and St. Paul, Rio, Downey, Greensboro, Jorvik, Brookville, Edmonton, Oeiras, Washington, Pasadena, Phoenix, Haninge, Prescott, Scottsdale and so many others...
are the places where I live, too. At least I know what's going on there on every day basis))))

Thank you, friends, for your comments and attention and I wish us the happy photo hunting!

PS.And thanks to the unknown author of the champagne image!

Vinzavod yard

Photo was made in August inside the yard of Modern art center "Vinzavod" (link to the site in English). Vinzavod means the wine factory which it was till the 21st century. In 2007 the place became the meeting point of Moscow modern artists. The names of the exhibition places sound very vinery: The hall of Red, the hall of White, the hall of big reservoir, the hall of fermenting, plus many galleries with rather arty names.

A friend of mine (Thank you, Simone!) sent me the link (please press here) which I want to share with you.
Russian photographer did the colorful shots in the early 20th century (between 1909-1912) and look at the quality of that shots! Besides, they are very interesting not only technically but as the source of info about the Russian Empire before the revolution.

I have just realized that we have not listen to music in this blog for so long (after I removed all music links in search for possible viruses and pop-ups). But I want to go on.
This is the old Russian Cossack song about the dream seen by the soldier before the battle, foreboding that he will lose his young head.

Inside the Columned Hall

Columned hall of Augustus gathering (other translation  "noble assembly", not sure which one is correct, but I choose the first one)).

The building of Columned hall of Augustus gathering was constructed in 80ties of 18th century by M.Kazakov. It is one of the most beautiful examples of Russian classicism in Moscow architecture.

The balls and receptions on special official occasions were held here in Tzar's Russia.
In Soviet Russia the building belonged to the Moscow Trade Unions  committee.

The hall is decorated with white Corinthian columns which gave the building its modern name and huge crystal chandeliers, hanging between the columns.

It was my first time in the building. September, 8th is the day of solidarity of the journalists. There was charity concert of classical music in the memory of the fallen journalists and my friend invited me. Mahler, Mozart, Beethoven.
Pleasure. And believe me, the acoustics in the hall is amazing.

Sound of Africa

Two days ago there was a pleasure to enjoy the hot drums of Africa in
"Farafina" (Burkina Faso) energetic drink-performance in jazz/ethno club "Dom" (home).
Farafina:

I was always mesmerized by the drums and the power they have over the human body. "Drums is the most important instrument" (quote from US3 in Cantaloop song) - I agree:-)

Site of "Dom". I recommend it to jazz/ethno music fans in Moscow

Open Air

Today I spent my day at open-air jazz festival "Usadba Jazz" in Arkhangelskoe, the mansion (usadba) 10 km (6,2 miles) away from Moscow.

The festival is held on five stages, for the 7th time, and lasts the whole week-end June, 5-6.

I highly recommend our Moscow located readers to visit the mansion, the buildings and nature are great.

Brass Band in Aleksandrovsky Garden

Every week-end in May the military brass bands were holding 2-hour concerts near Kremlin and on Poklonnaya Gora, celebrating the Victory day and continuing the tradition of the previous years.
I was in time for the last show of May 2010.

Do you know how live brass music is useful for your head and soul? I attach Youtube video-therapy :-)))

Alizbar Concert in Lectorium

I have just returned from folk-music concert which took place in small basement with great aсoustics facilities in old house in the centre of the city.
It was my first time in this place and first experience in the music of Alizbar. He is multi-instrumentalist and finds his inspiration in fairy tales of the world. His music is influenced by Celtic and Balkan folk. Alizbar site (click for details).
I enclose the piece I found on Youtube to show you his music. I hope you would enjoy it as I did.
The  musicians after the show. Last song, time when we were allowed to take photos.

Moscow House of Music

Well, these days we have  such a weather... If you have any depressing thoughts, your depression will grow large like a flower. I see so many flowers like that at the macro photos of my friends living in more  fortunate weather conditions :-))
That is why I refuse to post my city photos deep in frost and snow. We have cultural life, yes we do. If we succeed to reach cultural places through the snow barricades.
Joe Bonamassa visited the city and played rock and blues during this weekend. That was good. Professional and strong. Joe, thank you very much.
He performed in Moscow House of Music (official website for Moscow located readers), the building constructed in 2002 and is great place to be in touch with classical, jazz, rock, world music. There is one of the best organs in Moscow behind this removable curtain.

The only thing I do not understand is why there is no place for standing audience. When I hear the first sounds of rock music, I need to get up and dance, move, swallow beer, well you know.
I am afraid that now Joe thinks of us as if Muscovites is polite, calm and cold audience. No, we are not at all :-)))
