:: Day 3 :: Maintenance & Installation of EFI


Today,I still doing the same thing like yesterday which are installing EFIs and checking on the batteries. We done our maintenance at Ban Guan,Jln Nahu,Taman Mewah and many more.

I learn about the differences of the P/E(Pencawang Elektrik) and PAT(Pencawang Atas Tiang)

PAT [Pencawang Atas Tiang]:

~ No LVDB @ LV board (it has been replaced by "black box". Number of switch box is depend on the load/consumer at the place.

"Anti-clamp" which is the thing in red is located about 1-1.5 meters from ground. It is a limit set by TNB as a height that is safe to do any maintanence,repairing including installing any device. That is why,the EFI that need to be install here,must be put below the "anti-clamp".

The cost for building a PAT is much cheaper than a P/E.According to uncle Sundar, one PAT is cost around RM14k compared to P/E is about rm25K (both price is not including the transformer,switch box,LV board etc. The reason why we do have PAT is because at that place,they did not have enough space to build P/E.That is why they need PAT to substitute the P/E.

In the evening, we all went to Bandar Utama with Abg Azrin and Abg Mad(his assistance) to do checking on the DC of the relay. During the process,I can see how the EFI function when there's a trip. This substation has relays which supported by the DC(battery-30V). They call the DC as "nadi" to the relays. When the battery or DC is not function,the relay is not working.

~ Function of relay : When trip occur,current produced was large,so the relay use a ratio to minimize the current.If the relay did not minimize the value of the current,it may cause damage to the relay and switch box.

I learn on the function of Tab Changer.It is located at the transformer and usually is set to '3' as a standard.

VCB- Vacuum Circuit Breaker
A type of circuit breaker use to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and, by interrupting continuity, to immediately discontinue electrical flow. It uses vacuum as a medium. It also contains a heater to maintain the temperature to become warm because no vapour should exist in the VCB;water can caused danger!
p/s: Only VCB uses DC to support the relay!! Oil and Gas did not use DC.

iTs tyM to ExpLoRE =)

:: Day 2 -6th April 2010- (Tuesday)::

~En. Zaidi as my supervisor guided my to the "Stor Bakar Arang" where all the engineers,technicians and foremens gather before the go out to sites. I met En.Azrin as the AP (Authority Person) at the yard. We had a short briefing with other team members on tasks that need to be done for today.

7 of us went to Kuala Ketil to do maintenance at the substations(pencawang). Around 10 substations had been visited. This was the first time I entered a substation.I was so excited to know what are the things been "hiding" inside the substations and how do they look and what are the functions. Today I know how the transformer look like,the Switch Gear,The LVDB(Low Voltage Distribution Board)and Feeder Pillar. All these are the basic things at a substations.

~~ SUBSTATION ~~

Other than do checking on the battery of the EFI,we also need to installed EFI at the substation which did not have one. Which substation that need to be installed an EFI is depend on the map given from Abg Azrin as the foreman. An EFI must be place after the previous substation who did not has any EFI.


~Informations on :-

EFI [ Earth Fault Indicator ]: -
The faulty cable length is easy located by tracing the last indicator that has been tripped and the first indicator which has not tripped. The faulty section can be switched off and the rest of the cable can be put into operation again.

The Led will be placed outside the substation so that it is easier for the technician to see which substation has tripped. For each EFI,they have different bits set to be set occording to the specifications given by the engineers. Each type of bit sets are representing the duration of time for the EFI to keep operating when trip happened. We have setted the bits to " 1 3 7 9 11 12 " to set the LED to keep blinking for 3hours.

Occurding to Uncle Sundar, "1 transformer,1 LV board". So,the number or LV board is depends on the number of transformer at the substation.




TRANSFORMER

There are different type of transformer. Today i learn about CT(Current Transformer) and Voltage Transformer. At each EFI,there is a CT to detect when tripped occur in the cable while at the substations,we use voltage transformer. Different types of transfomer is being used depends on the number or loads/consumer at the particular of place. There are 50,750,1000 etc.

Switch Gear

Typically,switchgear in substations is located on both the high voltage and the low voltage side of large power transformers. The switchgear is located on the low voltage side of the transformers in distribution type substations.The switch gear that I saw today use Gas (SF6) circuit breakers. There is a meter showing the "green"-for safe to enter the room, and "red"-when it is not safe to enter the room because full of the gas.
There are also different brands for the switch gear:
- Tamco
- Merlin Gerin
- VEI

(^.^) my first day at work *TNB SP*

Hello bloggie~ Im at home now..4.21pm? on d first day?? Kinda early yah?..but actually i got home at 2.30pm :D *bukan ponteng ye*

So excited to wrote bout my first day.. =) I arrived TNB SP at Jln Petri at 7.45am..Nervous,Excited,Thrilled! I feel like wanna start a new stage of life..with working environment?? hm..many things should be expected,like pressure,hectic day,n sooo many things should b known..okok..continue with my "journey" for today. :)

I have to wait for En Ilias,the person-in-charge at the main building.He arrived at 8.20am..he was a bit late bcoz there are some problems.He keep saying 'sorry' for being late..* Its ok lah pkcik..u r BOSS..we r the trainee..* oPs... forgot to mention that my friend named Hairi also doing his Li here. Glad to have a friend who came from the same Uni.. :)

En. Ilias : Happy Go lucky...friendly...helpful... not to mention,his son is a final year student from Uniten.. :) He called him self "pakcik" so,i guess i have to call him pakcik rather than "encik". So nice of u pkcik..Nice to meet u! (^.^)

We've been brief about the working hours,the etiquettes,the attire and the schedule.

Working hours:
Sunday to Thursday : 8.00am-1.00pm
Lunch break: 1.00-2.00pm
Friday and Saturday : Off Day
*pls take note,i have to work on saturday! bcoz im in Kedah :(

After the short briefing,we have to go to another building which takes about 5minutes walking distance from here. All the engineers,foremans work there. We actually need to meet En zaidi as our supervisor but unfortunately,he's not in. En Ilias introduced us to all the staffs and visit all the departments.

Settled with the introduction,En Ilias let us go back til 2pm. Actually,during our visit this morning, not all the staffs are in the office becuase they have a meeting with the KJ = Ketua Jurutera. So, we need to came back at 2pm to meet En Zaidi.

2pm- Arrived at En Ilias office. Few documents need to be completed and then I have to go to the next building to meet En. Zaidi. There's a problem that im facing here,which is parking problem. The free parking lots are limited and its a bit hard for me to travel from one place to another. Another sections of parking lots need to be paid and it uses the parking coupon. RM0.60 per hour and i need to work from 8am-5pm. So how many wud it cost? with no allowance? sigh~ * kne rebut2 parking mcm kt coe pulak rase nye :D miss uniten edi! ahhaha *

Meeting with En.Zaidi in his office. He briefs generally about the 4 sections/modules that we need to go through during this 12weeks of time. I also have been intriduced to En Azrin as the AP. He will handle us stating tomorrow for the "transmitting module". He also brief us about the safety and hazards at the site. One thing that he said that I still remember is "bile kt sane nanti,kne buat 2 benda: tgn diam kt blkng,mulut bising" :) * meaning i have to ask questions to learn rather than pegang sane sini. =) *

Done with the second short briefing,my journey had finally ends at 2.31pm. En. Zaidi ask us to go back home and rilex and prepare for the "journey" tomorrow! *i cant wait to do my first field work!*

*A big smile on my face!!* Alhamdulillah..finally I got a place to do my Industrial Training. So now, lets prepare for the journey! yeahh~ :)

Place : Bahagian Pembahagian TNB Sungai Petani,Kedah.
