The random ramblings of a violist/engineer/very clever person. Fond of most things space, science, classical music, and sci-fi.
A prominent computer scientist who has spent 20 years publishing academic papers on cryptography, privacy, and cybersecurity has gone incommunicado, had his professor profile, email account, and phone number removed by his employer, Indiana University, and had his homes raided by the FBI. No one knows why. ... Fellow researchers took to social media over the weekend to register their concern over the series of events. "None of this is in any way normal," Matthew Green, a professor specializing in cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, wrote on Mastodon. He continued: "Has anyone been in contact? I hear heโ€™s been missing for two weeks and his students canโ€™t reach him. How does this not get noticed for two weeks???" In the same thread, Matt Blaze, a McDevitt professor of computer science and law at Georgetown University, said: "It's hard to imagine what reason there could be for the university to scrub its website as if he never worked there. And while there's a process for removing tenured faculty, it takes more than an afternoon to do it."

oh and heโ€™s chinese so we do know why the trump administration targeted him

if parks and rec was still being made theyโ€™d do a bit where ron swanson has to wear a pronouns name tag and itโ€™d just be โ€œ???/???โ€ And itโ€™d cut to a talking head of him going

โ€œIโ€™ve been a fool all this time. Itโ€™s bad enough the government knows my name, but now they want to know my gender? So Iโ€™m not letting them know my preferred pronouns. As far as Iโ€™m concerned, no one in this building should refer to me at all.โ€

Ron walks into the main area of the office like โ€œEveryone, announcement! I notice that you have been referring to me with he/him pronouns for YEARS. As I do not think the government has any business knowing my personal information, this behavior may incline them to make conclusions that they have no business even thinking about. Therefore, I request that you switch it up from now on. Keep em guessing. That is all.โ€

He tries to turn around and walk back into his office, but Leslie starts crying and saying Supportive Things about how proud she is to see him exploring his gender and immediately switches to they/them; she instructs Ben and Ann to do the same. Donna and Chris go for she/her, for different reasons.

Tom assures Ron that he will use only the slickest, coolest, dopest designer pronouns; he sweeps in the next day and announces that he's put together a powerpoint of the most stylish and fashionable neopronouns to come out of Milan this season. The powerpoint includes the scarf, cologne and sunglasses that pair best with each option. Jerry is the only one to attend this presentation, which leaves him even more Big Confused about the whole thing than he already was. In Jerry's efforts to clumsily be an ally, he keeps accidentally "misgendering" Ron four different times in four different ways in every interaction and apologizing elaborately for every single mistake, thereby inadvertently doing the best job out of any of them at fulfilling the brief.

Andy does not know what a pronoun is, but in the spirit of himbo helpfulness, he's made a list of Words that he knows Ron likes, such as "sandwich", "woodworking", and "bacon". (Ron snatches it, tears it up, throws it in the trash, and sets the trash basket on fire, and firmly instructs Andy to never again mention anything that Ron likes while inside a government building.)

April, of course, keeps using he/him until Ron calls her into his office to re-explain the strategy of Operation: Muddy The Waters, whereupon she blinks owlishly at him and says, "I mean, isn't that just what they'd expect you to do if you were trying to hide something from the government? If you exclude one pronoun, then they know that's the one you care about. You have to double-bluff them." Ron squints at her for a long moment and says flatly, "Hm. Go back to your desk." The camera stays on Ron watching her through his window as his voiceover says, "April is a valuable employee. I look forward to one day when she leaves this hellhole and uses her strategic genius and insider knowledge to tear down the government."

I'd just like to clarify some things about Senator Cory Booker's marathon Senate speech in protest of the present administration and everything they are doing to the American people.

Senator Booker was NOT allowed to sit down, eat, or use the bathroom during his speech. Sitting or leaving the room to use the bathroom would be considered yielding the floor. Eating would have interfered with his speaking and the person who has the senate floor must continue to speak, except when listening to questions that they will then answer.

He only took occasional sips of water.

The person who previously held the record for longest speech on the Senate floor did have bathroom breaks and also did things like read from the encyclopedia.

Senator Booker did not do that. His speech was to point out the damage that this administration is doing and he stayed on that subject.

Senator Booker's speech did reach many people. It wasn't a silly stunt that was done so that he could take the record for longest speech. He wanted to show the country that democrats will do something to bring attention to the problems we are facing. That democrats are listening to them.

Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25 hours and 4 minutes to "make good trouble."

also like, a Black man breaking Strom Thurmond's record is absolutely *chef's kiss*

for those who are too young to know about Strom, he was literally a white supremacist

He trained himself to give this speech by practicing and then implementing limits on food and water intake leading up to this. He cut out food for days, then cut out water the day before.

He then went to do an appearance on Maddow after yielding.

He did interviews with multiple people after before he ate or slept. Including tiktokers. It was genuinely about speaking to the people to show us he was listening. He's standing for us in a way we've been begging our politicians to do for decades at this point. And he was smart and made sure to tell people that that's what he was doing, over and over again.

In the last few decades we've gotten used to expecting our politicians to lie to us. I was probably ten the first time I remember hearing "campaign promises" used as a joking euphemism for lying. I think a lot of people don't bother voting because they assume that everyone running is lying so voting doesn't really matter. If you don't know what you can believe from a politician then you're voting blind no matter who you vote for, so why do it. And the people who do vote tend to vote along party lines without bothering to look closer since political platforms tend to be fictional anyway.

Cory Booker talked to as many people as he could manage afterwards. He told as many different news sources as he could manage that he was there explicitly because it was what his constituents asked for. Implying that people should be expecting the same from their own representatives. Reminding people what his job actually is. Reminding people that there ARE people out there who will do the job they were elected to do and actually represent their constituents. He wanted as many people as possible to hear that they can actually demand things from politicians.

I admire him for this one. Give me a few more senators doing this and I might think there's still hope to prevent ww3.

Thurmond wasn't JUST a white supremacist. His filibuster was to block the Civil Rights Act of 1957, which was supposed to "provide federal protection for African American voting rights" and established the US Commission on Civil Rights and the US DOJ Civil Rights Division. That Act helped pave the way for Booker to eventually become a senator in the first place. Which is why it means so goddamn much that he took that record from the man who tried to block it.

Thurmond wasted a record amount of everyone's time trying to prevent people like Booker from having equal rights under the law, and then Booker took that record from him by protesting the injustice we've been forced to put up with under this administration.

I do take a small amount of petty glee over the fact that as soon as Booker hit that record, Thurmond's Wikipedia page was edited to name him as only the SECOND longest Senate speech. Like it was immediate. Someone had that edit locked and loaded and was just watching the clock for when to save it.

there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well

and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it

the researchers found that being online didnt make people more hostile, but that being online allowed already hostile people to dominate forum conversations, and the less aggressive people were much less likely to reply or engage, ending in just the aggressive people bickering at eachother

Okay, so the first source is basically a highlight of information from the second source. I'd definitely recommend reading that second source for the whole picture, guys!

i can't quite remember but i think the first ep i watched was one of the slitheen ones when it first aired, don't think i started with 'rose' aha. back when i wasn't online much if at all and had to wait many months for each series to air here in nz

but doctor who is one of the main things that kept me drawing, can literally track my progress with drawings of david tennant's doctors, so it has a special place for me and i'll always come back to it

here's to many more years to come ๐Ÿฅณ

Bro absolutely COOKED with this.

If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.
