I don’t try to meditate anymore because once I realized that it can’t actually turn me into a water bender my brain stopped letting me do it.

When I was 14 some niche website on the third page of Google convinced me that if I meditate hard enough I could channel my qi energy into making water obey my commands and during that time I got so good at meditating. I could just let my thoughts and earthly worries pass for hours, unbothered.

Then one day I was like “wait a minute qi energy isn’t real” and then I lost the ability to meditate

This was also during a phase in my life where I was so deeply in denial about being transgender that I convinced myself that me secretly being a vampire without knowing it was more likely.

Like I’d already figured out two years earlier that I was trans but at this point I was like no I’m not queer I just need to achieve enlightenment so I can be a water bending vampire empath. This seems much more likely.

I'd just like to clarify some things about Senator Cory Booker's marathon Senate speech in protest of the present administration and everything they are doing to the American people.

Senator Booker was NOT allowed to sit down, eat, or use the bathroom during his speech. Sitting or leaving the room to use the bathroom would be considered yielding the floor. Eating would have interfered with his speaking and the person who has the senate floor must continue to speak, except when listening to questions that they will then answer.

He only took occasional sips of water.

The person who previously held the record for longest speech on the Senate floor did have bathroom breaks and also did things like read from the encyclopedia.

Senator Booker did not do that. His speech was to point out the damage that this administration is doing and he stayed on that subject.

Senator Booker's speech did reach many people. It wasn't a silly stunt that was done so that he could take the record for longest speech. He wanted to show the country that democrats will do something to bring attention to the problems we are facing. That democrats are listening to them.

He trained himself to give this speech by practicing and then implementing limits on food and water intake leading up to this. He cut out food for days, then cut out water the day before.

Senator Strom Thurmond, a segregationist and white supremacist, held the previous record of 24 hours and 18 minutes when he filibustered the vote on the Civil Rights Act.

Sen. Thurmond had someone put a bucket just outside of the doorway to the cloakroom so that he could keep one foot on the floor while pissing into this bucket, to hold the floor.

Senator Booker would never disrespect the Senate, nor "bend the rules" in such a way.

Because of this Sen. Thurmond could drink coffee or anything else he wanted, as much as he wanted, to keep himself awake, soothe his throat, and keep his mouth from becoming dry.

Senator Booker limited himself to a few sips at a time from two glasses of water at the podium.

Also, Sen. Thurmond began his speech immediately before a vote was to be taken and his speech was specifically to delay that vote. That is the definition of a "filibuster".

Senator Booker's speech was not designed to delay or prevent any vote. He did not know how long he would be physically able to speak. Therefore, his was a speech, not a filibuster.

ETA2: Strom Thurmond did infant temporarily yield the floor to a colleague as well and took a bathroom break at that time. He also had some rye bread and hamburger to eat.

Not just ‘a’ white supremacist. He was *THE* white supremacist. INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT CONTEXT HERE is that Storm Thurmond’s speech that he broke the record of? It was 24 hours and 18 minutes opposing *the Civil Rights Act of 1957*. He voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was a segregationist POS who was the blueprint for the Southern Strategy which was designed by Lee Atwater, a former Thurmond aide. Having his record broken by Booker is astounding and I’m so happy.

I tuned into some of the later hours of his speech, and I was really moved by how substantive it was (I'm sure he was repeating himself at times, but that is to be expected) and he took the moment to criticize himself and the Dems writ large while mainly focusing his ire on how bad this administration is and this feckless Republican-controlled Congress is enabling it. There were no stunts, no reading of Dr. Seuss like Ted Cruz, just pure "fuck-this-let's-let-it-all-out" catharsis.

That he exceeded Strom Thurmond's record is the rhetorical cherry on top.

His team is already putting out clips all over social media, which is fantastic, and I'm grateful that both of my Senators supported him with questions and my Congressman was there for moral support.
