Drums And Tuba

ImageHost.org
Drums & Tuba tapped a variety of musical traditions and experimentation to forge its eclectic identity. The New York-based trio carried its message home by combining rock, Afro-beat, jazz, punk, electronica, New Orleans brass band traditions, and funk into a heady mix of grooves and song-structured instrumental music. Drums & Tuba, consisting of Brian Wolff (tuba, trumpet, trombone), Anthony Nozero (drums, percussion, electronics), and Neal McKeeby (guitars), started to focus more attention on electronica and rock with the release of Vinyl Killer on Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records in 2001. It all started for the group in 1995 in Austin, TX, where all three members had migrated to discover new musical insights in the early '90s. Wolff and Nozero began as a duo called Just Drums & Tuba, performing weekend nights for tips on Sixth Street in downtown Austin. They considered adding another horn player and going the brass band route, but few good ones were available in Austin, so soon they added guitarist McKeeby (who had played with Wolff in the rock band Hominy Bop) and shortened their band name to Drums & Tuba.
ImageHost.orgImageHost.org
The trio released its first CD, Box Fetish, in 1997 on T.E.C. Tones (later reissued on My Pal God Records), following it with The Flying Ballerina (1998) and Flatheads and Spoonies (1999), the band's first for My Pal God. Early on, the Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans influenced Wolff, and all three listened to the Meters, but electronica started to surface in the band's music on Flatheads and Spoonies. (Electronica and Fela Kuti's Afro-beat music would play an increasingly important role on Drum & Tuba's CD Vinyl Killer.)
ImageHost.orgImageHost.org
After performing locally in Austin and touring briefly, the band began to splinter in late 1999 when its members relocated to different cities. Wolff returned to his hometown, New York City, to complete a Masters degree in music education at New York University. Nozero, from Madison, WI, moved to Chicago. Drums & Tuba was resurrected after Ani DiFranco asked the group to open for her band on tour in 1998. She spent a lot of time in Austin recording her own songs and heard about Drums & Tuba from a recording engineer at Congress House Studios. Touring enabled the band to reactivate and it became more energetic about identifying its sound. The group took a mainstream approach to song structure, but was experimental in its embrace of various musical genres. Drums & Tuba self-released its next two records, a 7" called Borscht and an EP called Cairo, in 2000. They toured again with DiFranco and with the New Orleans-based group Galactic in 2000. Then released a LIVE album built from the vault of shows over the last three years, featuring two unreleased tracks. DiFranco later signed the trio to her Righteous Babe Records and released its Vinyl Killer (co-produced by DiFranco and her associate Andrew "Goat Boy" Gilchrist) in 2001, followed by Mostly Ape a year later and Battles Olé in 2005.

Also an album of out-takes from Mostly Ape and Vinyl Killer as well as a couple of live tracks (one from a KUT Radio show in 1996)was self released in 2003, it was called Gas Up Blow Up.

This double 7" single set with a gatefold sleeve is the first official Ralph Records release. Roughly 500 were made and many have the gatefold sleeves stuck together because they were folded and packaged before the varnish, applied to seal in the hand silk-screened cover art, had sufficiently dried. All copies are signed and intentionally misnumbered (consider the following mislabellings: 16/18, 7/58,000 and even 2/1!!!).
Also, false credits were listed on the record labels, since The Residents refused to be identified as either artists or writers at the time; however, the inside cover contains the phrase "Seasons Greetings - Residents Uninc." The actual fictitious groups listed were apparently inside jokes and appear as follows:
Side One: Ivory & The Braineaters
Side Two: The College Walkers
Side Three: Delta Nudes
Side Four: Arf & Omega featuring The Singing Lawnchairs

The 12 Days of Brumalia

The 12 Days of Brumalia was an internet event presented by The Residents and Residents.com. For 12 days, starting on December 25th, a new song was posted on Residents.com web site along with an illustration and a quote. On the 13th day, The Residents presented the epic musical work, The Feast of Epiphany.

Brumalia: Birthday of the Sun
Thousands of years before Christ, so-called pagans worshiped the Sun as a god. When winter approached, the sun dipped lower and lower in the sky each day. It seemed to the people that their god was forsaking them. The shortest day of the year came around December 21 (winter solstice). Several days later it became evident that the sun was coming back. When the people were sure the sun was returning, a great celebration called the Brumalia began on December 25th.

On the eve of Brumalia, people exchanged gifts, sang songs, played games, and feasted. They kissed under mistletoe, which was considered sacred to the Sun-god and thought to have miraculous healing qualities. Holly berries were also considered sacred. Holly wreaths, round like the sun, decorated houses and places of worship during Brumalia.

The Roman Catholic Church absorbed the Brumalian rituals around 350 A. D. In the fifth century the church ordered Christmas to be celebrated forever on the Brumalia, December 25, inasmuch as no certain knowledge of Christ’s birthday existed. The birthday of the sun, became the birthday of the son.

What you celebrate is not important. The important thing is to notice the circle, the cycle of life and acknowledge it with a bit of celebration. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Take a walk and check out a dead leaf. That will be you one day. Each human is allowed a limited number of year cycles. Make 2010 count and do something cool this year.

This recording was first ever released as Catalogue number TOPY 003 on thee 23rd December 1984 as a Picture Disc Limited Edition ov 999 copies. One side was a full colour photograph ov Caresse P-Orridge as a baby, thee other side had text in Red on White. It was only available to shops and distributors between 11am and 12am on that actual day! Rough Trade co-ordinated this through their telex lines for us. All thee music was recorded on a 4 Track Cassette machine under thee guidance of Alex Fergusson, thee original co-founder and partner, with Genesis P-Orridge, ov Psychic TV. "Pagan Day" was subtitled "Pages From A Notebook" because that is precisely what it was. Thee revealing ov thee process itself. Most PTV songs in their earliest era began life as these kinds ov cassette sketches often recorded in Alex's room at thee YMCA over coffee. "Pagan Day" is not therefore a "finished" recording in thee commonly accepted sense, it is an intimate glimpse into a place where "Source Are Rare". However, thee simplicity and privacy of it's evolution onto a record makes it appealing in quite a special way. Some songs were never intended to be heard outside our own living rooms but to conceal thee frailties would we felt, compromise thee integrity and honesty ov this chronicle. Due to popular interest, and extremely high "collector" prices being paid for thee original Picture Disc, "Pagan Day" was re-issued on normal vinyl, in a card sleeve as part ov Temple Records Library Series as a matter ov completeness, and as a matter ov fact.

"Nothing Matters, like thee end ov Matter" Old TOPI Proverb.

Vivian Stanshall

VIVIAN STANSHALL was an English singer-songwriter, painter, musician, author, poet and wit, best known for his work with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, and the voice of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. Bryan Chandler will host a tribute to this true zany, and whimsical Dada artist. Hold on to your trousers!

KUSF 2009-09-20 6-7 PM - Spotlight - Vivian Stanshall - Hour 2

Musician and performer Neil Innes discusses the life of his Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band colleague and friend Vivian Stanshall. Neil recalls the moment he met Vivian Stanshall in London: he was wearing Billy Bunter trousers, a Victorian frock coat and horrible purple pince-nez glasses and carrying a euphonium. So began a friendship and a musical partnership that exploded into life with The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, culminating in tours and TV series. Vivian's second wife, Ki Longfellow, joins the discussion to help explore the man behind the colourful public persona.

In the 1970s Stanshall recorded numerous sessions for BBC Radio 1's John Peel show which elaborated, with a fine mixture of eloquence and irreverence, on the weird and wonderful adventures of the inebriate and blimpish Sir Henry Rawlinson, his dotty wife Great Aunt Florrie, his "unusual" brother Hubert (who, for speed, stature and far-seeing habitually, goes on stilts), old Scrotum the wrinkled retainer, Mrs E, the rambling and unhygienic cook, and many other inhabitants of the crumbling stately home Rawlinson End and its environs. In fact, the Rawlinson family had been populating Vivian's imagination for quite a while, their very first appearance (in name, at least) being on the Bonzos' 1967 number "The Intro & The Outro": "Great to hear the Rawlinsons on trombone" .

Teddy Boys Dont Knit (1981)

1. King Kripple - The first of many boldly honest & unflattering self-appraisals. Also a snide aside at the depressing celebration of valetudinarianism. So mush a Sane of the Tames, doncha think?

2. Slave Valse - After a good deal of Seutonius-sapping and Graves-digging - your historical roman. Still discombobulated? You won't be when you hear: SLAVE VALSE.

3. Gums - Strangely smug anag. fans... Anyone out there notice that 'The Rub' was the only unusual Hubert? From the film and book: 'Sir Henry at Rawlinson End' GUMS

4. Bewilderbeeste - A song of love for Ki (a West Calif. biter of soft centres). A song of hate for Ik (an East Afric tribe of hard screens)

5. Calypso To Colapso - Students of slang should solve the (anything for a rhyme) line 'lapin 'til the pips go' in under half a cock. Then it's scrolls, gowns, and turbans all around.

6. The Tube - About my kid (yours too I shouldn't wonder, tho' I pray she does - wonder that is - all her life). Musically, this one must be okay - because she bounces & shouts to it - the real test. Went wobble to wubbish... Whether she'll love me for this rather personal paean when she's old enough to appreciate its rather personal functionalism - I dunno. But it's the only way I can put tears of joy & pride & big softy cuddles on record. So it's fer me then? There's loads of boink, bink & bung and other nippers are chuffed when they hear it. If I can do that - don't care what you say.

7. Ginger Geezer - The juke-box stops like the Patriotic Shortener, leaving you singing a diminuendo gobbledegook 'cos you don't know the bloody words. V. embarrassing! So - an air of Babel 'cept this'n is in the argot of the costermonger. Also from the film/book 'Sir Henry at Rawlinson End'. What jinks for you to work it all out. You know it makes sense.

8. The Cracks Are Showing - The whole fabric of Society rant? A socio/politco/mephitico/satirico-Chirico-co the Clown? O no - just Hubert's way of describing the lightning. As well & at last from the film/book 'Sir Henry...' "A metaphysical observation of Tartarean profundity, Ma'am" (Mr. Slodden)

9. Flung A Dummy - A true story given me - as was the title - by 'Screamin' T. Simmons, editor of the Rock 'n' Roll Camel-Walker, mate & rock historian. A fast-paced waxing involving no more than 3 chords (one of which remains the same for over 60 bars before the fluff & we all follow). Legs splitfully astride, no inversions, heads down on the f shape. The cellist was brusquely booted out for introducing an element of melody - this is totally unacceptable. An ideal beginner for the advanced & well past it.

10. Possibly An Armchair & Fresh Faced Boys - You are what you eat - you are what you seat. Really! I've watched this sort of thing happening in my own family.

11. Terry Keeps His Clips On - THOCK for short (Terry His On-going Clips Keeps) Young Cumberpatch maintains a family tradition & jolly sensible too! A little something to soft-pedal in the age of oaken thighs. Sir Walter Raleigh was a stupid git not so much because he brought back the wrong shag; but because he didn't use his wampum to start his splendid bike factory the sooner. The Pipes of Peace now constitute the frame....

12. Brass Macaw And Broken Bottles - How like the Widows of Laughter to mourn in such jolly colours. Song for a Barby-Doll I once knew & hope is now well & singing.

13. Nose Hymn - Always wanted to be 'one of the boys'. Always riveted by the 'Back-Up Singers' (good name for an angry close-harmony group?) - it's the huge suits moving and the, the choreography. So screw the lead: let's hear it for the doo-wahs, the doo-wops & the greasy doo-dagos.

14. Everyday, I Have The Blows - "Lucille, send me some tissues - Man-size I pray-ay-ay" S'not entirely - a song about tunnels.

15. Smoke Signals At Night - Bags of hope here for the spiritually inclined or horizontal. While you enjoy a night out at the Grand Circus of Infinities: Big Buddha is watching you.

16. Nouveau Riffe - Shades of Uriah, Caliban & Tartuffe - as roadies? Big Johnnie cashes yet another cheque - "is 'e? Bluddy 'Eck I thought t'lad were from Salford... Aye tha's right - 'E were a tufted-carpet salesman er summat afore t'King made 'im 'is 'personal' like. Never 'ad thought 'e'd turn nasty...... "

One of the most original and therefore well-recognised work among Laswell's vast catalogue. A group of artists read pieces of the story of Hassan Ibn Sabbah, a legendary outcast and chief of nomadic assassins in the ancient Middle East. The voices are amazing (think Iggy Pop for starters), and backed up with Laswell's groovy bass and drums give you one great an experience in music. Spoken word ambient pieces are usually risky, certainly not for a casual listening, however this one is worth as many attempts as required to get the feeling of its humid, illusionary atmosphere - all the hints are there. eliks_postindustry (Discogs)

Frank Pahl's first solo album, The Cowboy Disciple, gave the composer a chance to stretch and develop his very personal style when it comes to childish yet freakishly warped instrumental tunes. Friends from his band Only a Mother (Marko Novachcoff, Bobbi Benson, Doug Gourlay, Mary Richards) sit in on a handful of tracks, either separately to bring their own touch to a piece, or as a group, performing a few as yet unrecorded songs Pahl had written for the outfit. Elsewhere the composer gets moodier ("Dirge #14") and experiments with multi-tracking (the two "Ode to Euphonium" tracks, "Ode to Ocarina," and "Ode to Harmonium"). More introspective and exploratory, the music on this CD foretells some of his works for dance and theater (like his music for a production of The Tempest, released on the Scavenger Quartet's Whistling for Leftovers CD), but also his other solo albums of the 1990s, especially Remove the Cork. His virtuosity on a wide array of unusual instruments like euphonium, harmonium, banjo, and a plethora of home-built instruments impresses but never gets in the way of the writing. More personal than the group's songs, the music on this CD requires more attention from the listener. If Pahl's art had not yet reached the heights found in subsequent releases, it still had the power to captivate and surprise.

Frank Pahl (Only A Mother) made a brilliant little solo record with many guests with folks like Immigrant Suns, Renaldo and The Loaf's Brian Poole, David Greenberger, Eugene Chadbourne, and other Michigan folks like the Only a Mother gang.

In Cahoots is Frank Pahl's most accessible album, thanks to a handful of almost-normal songs. All tracks are the fruit of a collaboration. Guests include Immigrant Suns, Eugene Chadbourne, Shaking Ray Levis, Luc Houtkamp, Missy Gibson, and Pahl's old group Only a Mother. Instrumentation is this artist's calling card. Throughout the album, the listener is met by euphoniums, pump organs, banjos, ukuleles, along with acoustic guitars, violins, cellos, vocals, and as little percussion as possible. The music often feels detuned or amateurish -- the same artistic amateurism that guided Pascal Comelade for so many years. Half of these pieces have lyrics, usually bittersweet, ironic, or downright funny, like these lines from "These Lips": "These lips of mine, they yearn for another/maybe you'd like to partake of their sweet juices" (sung in a bluesy Tom Waits impression and accompanied by a string quartet). Missy Gibson's voice graces two tracks, both beautiful and unusual ballads. Chadbourne's banjo and vocal contribution to "Emotional Thumbs" turns it into one of the weirdest bits of folk you'll ever here. The instrumental pieces follow the same serious/kidding paradigm: the quality of the writing is undeniable, while the delivery keeps telling us that we should not take it all too seriously. And yet, after listening to In Cahoots, snippets of melodies remain attached to your brains, something that is not necessarily the case with Pahl's follow-up Remove the Cork, which requires a little more effort. This one is the best place to start. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide

It may be hard to believe, but The Back of Beyond is Frank Pahl's first solo album since 1998! In the meantime he has released a collaboration with the French naive duo Klimperei and an album with his Scavenger Quartet. Both groups make appearances on this album, along with the usual suspects, expert "Pahlologists" such as Marko Novachcoff, Terri Sarris, and Bobbi Benson. The Back of Beyond is more focused than In Cahoots (1996) or Remove the Cork (1998), as it sticks to the instrumental format. And Pahl has refined his art. His music mostly consists of precious little melodies performed on an assortment of toy and unusual instruments: ukuleles, euphonium, harmonium, zither, melodica, and an array of self-built automated devices. Each of these short pieces (23 in the course of an hour) feels like a bonsai. Under its apparent fragility lies a world of small details and precise gestures. Yes, there is something Japanese in the refinement of this music, despite — or even because of — the cling-clang of its misfit toys. The sound world of Pascal Comelade once more comes to mind, although Pahl's music is also rooted in Americana. "Epilogue" has a country-folk sound buried deeply in its core. And what about his interpretation of an old tune from the Little Rascals television series, "Good Old Days"? Only Pahl could dig that up and make it sound timeless. As the years pass by, the humorous singer/songwriter of Only a Mother has turned into a composer of finesse for unlikely orchestras. You can prefer one over the other, but you can't deny the irresistible charm of The Back of Beyond. — François Couture- All Music Guide

Frank Pahl is very well known for his thoroughly experimental but always catchy instrumentation, often played on obscure, and sometimes mechanically-automated instruments. His song-writing, similarly, is known for its bizarre sense of humor. All these aspects of his musical persona have come into focus on this, his latest solo album, more concisely then ever. It is also imbued with the deepest sense of sociopolitical awareness I have heard on an album in a long time, especially given a contemporary indie music scene which is so afraid to be political.
