Budget 2010: David Cameron looks for 'wisdom of crowds' in online reaction

Tory leader wants public to offer observations on budget - particularly of small print

David Cameron announced plans today to crowdsource public reaction to the budget, putting the document online and asking members of the public to examine the small print.

The Tory leader hopes a large number of people making observations will harness the "wisdom of crowds".

It is the Conservatives' second foray this week into digital politics – territory all the major parties are keen to prove they "get".

The first, however, resulted in the temporary removal of a campaign site when an attempt to make "Cash Gordon" a trending topic among UK Twitter users backfired after only a few hours.

Liam Byrne, the chief secretary to the Treasury, said the Tory plan was evidence that Cameron "needs help" with his response.
