It then seemed that the Greek political ecology was finally coming of age, yet after just two years the party collapsed, marking a decade-long eclipse of green politics in Greece. This book presents and discusses the emergence of political ecology in Greece, the formation of the Green party, its electoral and parliamentary record, the internal tensions and external shocks it experienced as well as the reasons leading to the final collapse of the Greek greens. The book is based on extensive archival research and a large number of interviews with key activists of the period. Thus it should be especially useful to students of green parties and politics or anyone else who may be interested in the emergence and early development of the Greek green movement.

While themain protagonists were foresters, who prioritised the importance of forests in providingtimber, and those involved in animal husbandry, who needed the forests as grazinggrounds, a number of other societal and political actors also engaged in this century-longstruggle, which culminated in the 1937 decision to remove goats from Greek forests. itshows how the Greek foresters succeeded in framing the goat and goat rearing as thesymbol of the country’s deforestation but also underdevelopment, both in economic andin cultural terms. also, from the 1920s onwards, the large goat herds stood in the way ofthe development of the Greek agricultural sector: the extensive and free-roaming animalhusbandry was viewed as an opponent of the state-sponsored and -endorsed settled farmer, who would help Greece in securing the desperately sought σιτάρκεια (grain sufficiency).once ioannis Metaxas seized power and established his authoritarian 4 august regime, which placed special emphasis on the agricultural development of the country, the fate ofthe goat was sealed: the “horned satan” had to die, not just for the sake of the forests but, according to Metaxas himself, for the very survival of the Greek people.
