Ethnicity as journalism paradigm: Polarization and political parallelism of Ethiopian news in transition

In the wake of the 2018 liberalization of journalistic freedoms in Ethiopia, new waves of politic... more In the wake of the 2018 liberalization of journalistic freedoms in Ethiopia, new waves of political unrest and a re-tightened grip on the media have emerged. A key feature in this context is the increasing reference to ethnic contrasts reflecting regional differences. While Ethiopia is a unique country in the African context in the sense of never having been colonized (with the exception of a brief period of Italian occupation), features of the contemporary media situation are also of general validity in understanding political realities in other African countries. This paper explores the concept of 'journalism paradigms' in that regard, with the follow-up question of how an understanding of journalism paradigms founded on ethnic boundaries might also contribute toward a more distinctly 'African' journalism research framework.

Sammendrag Ved universiteter og høgskoler tar ledelsen og støtte- og utviklingsmiljøer ulike grep... more Sammendrag Ved universiteter og høgskoler tar ledelsen og støtte- og utviklingsmiljøer ulike grep for å motivere fagansatte til å utforske digitale teknologiers pedagogiske potensialer. De ønsker også å utvikle mer aktive og fleksible undervisningspraksiser enn de som tradisjonelt har preget sektoren. I denne studien har vi undersøkt bruk av videofortellinger som redskap for å fremme fagansattes refleksjon over egen utdanningspraksis. Observasjon av diskusjoner mellom 13 undervisere fra ulike studieprogram og fag, er analysert i artikkelen. Diskusjonene som er studiens analyseobjekt, foregikk på et kurs i UH-pedagogikk (vår 2016). Før kurset så informantene to videofortellinger om omvendt undervisning. Studien viser at videofortellingene og spørsmålene som er knyttet til, fungerer som redskap for refleksjon i tverrfaglige kontekster. Selv om akademiske og fagspesifikke tradisjoner i en del tilfeller hemmer refleksjon over ny praksis, bidrar et tverrfaglig miljø til å fremme refleksjon.

Weltkrieg in einen gemeinnützigen Veranstaltungsort umwandelte, dessen Vision es war, sich zu einem national anerkannten Friedenserziehungsforum zu entwickeln. In den ersten beiden Jahren war das Zentrum von Bankrott und geringer Anerkennung bedroht. Dann setzte sich aber doch die angestrebte Vision durch-Erzbischof Desmond Tutu aus Südafrika kam zweimal zu Besuch, und es wurde eine Joint Venture Vereinbarung mit dem von der UNESCO anerkannten Robben-Island-Heritage Museum in Cape Town unterzeichnet. Weitere Kooperationsvereinbarungen folgten. Aber was hatte diese Vision an sich, das plötzlich die Aufmerksamkeit von in der Friedensarbeit engagierten Individuen und Organisationen auf sich zog? Können wir aus der Geschichte des Zentrums etwas über Friedenserziehung als eine Art narrativer Strategie lernen?

This is given some justification by the already noted, single reference to cultural studies in the book (p. 33), where Rowlands refers to its endorsement of versions of flat-earth relativism. It is an end-of-paragraph sideswipe that is as uncharacteristically ill-tempered as it is intellectually inaccurate. It is could also be said that the descent of fame from celebrity to celetoids, to borrow Chris Rojek’s term, is not as historically recent as Rowlands suggests. This would perhaps be acknowledged readily enough by Rowlands, given that he cites Adorno and Horkheimer’s Dialectic of Enlightenment in his brief further reading section at the end of the book. Their discussion of manufactured fame and pseudo-individuality continues to have a certain relevance to today’s celebrity culture, however much we might want to qualify it, so it is strange that they are not taken up in the main body of the book. Other references to early 20th-century celebs and the equivalents of vfame at that time could have been cited, from both literary and non-literary sources, but to be fair to Rowlands, he doubtless wrote the book to a strict word limit, and the ‘Art of Living’ series to which it belongs is designed to open up philosophical discussion to a wider public around a set of key issues, such as sport, deception and work. In this respect the book is admirable – accessibly written, with straightforwardly laid out pathways and clearly marked turns of direction. In addition, despite the criticisms that can be made, it offers a persuasive account of the leading characteristics of contemporary fame, or rather its degenerate variant. Best of all, the book is refreshing in its analysis, bringing something different and new to the diagnosis of the production and consumption of contemporary fame. It is in this respect, most of all, that it should be applauded.

The main focus of this study was to find out the over all level of audience satisfaction with ETV... more The main focus of this study was to find out the over all level of audience satisfaction with ETV Afan Oromo programs. In relation to this, attempts were made to assess audiences' program preference, as to why people watch ETV Afan Oromo programs, how audiences react to the contents and presentations of the programs. Qualitative method of research was utilized throughout the research. Hence, in-depth individual interview and focus group discussions were instruments of data collection. Three locations, Addis Ababa and two towns from the Oromia National Regional State (Adama & Ambo) were selected purposely to carry out the individual in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with respondents who were also drawn purposefully. In addition, some editors who are working in ETV Afan Oromo section were also interviewed to make the study more complete. Regarding, related literature, attempts have also been made to review various literatures written in connection with the theme. Accordingly, different theoretical frame works with particular emphasis to the uses and gratifications approach were presented and discussed As to the findings of this study, the over whelming majority of the respondents appear to have strong affinity to ETV's programs of Afan Oromo which has also become the reason for their attendance. Consequently, they watch the programs irrespective of their needs and desires, satisfaction / dissatisfaction and also program genres. They seem to watch the programs with the sense of belongingness to their language as a basis of their habitual engagement. When it comes to audience preference, among the ETV Afan Oromo programs, the entertainment took the first while the educational and informative ones took the second and third leg respectively. All in all, in relation to over all satisfaction, the outcomes of both the individual in-depth interviews and focus group discussions designate that the majority are neither in a very satisfied nor in a very dissatisfied positions. Rather, they are in a medium level of satisfaction. However, compared to the first five years of the launching of the Afan Oromo program, the latter periods have shown relative improvements as far as audience satisfaction is concerned.

In 2001, a peace foundation was set up in Southern Norway, where a regional WW II Gestapo headqua... more In 2001, a peace foundation was set up in Southern Norway, where a regional WW II Gestapo headquarters became a non-profit venue with a vision of becoming a nationally recognized peace education center. The first two years saw regular threats of bankruptcy and little recognition. Then, the vision took hold – Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa came to visit twice, and a joint venture agreement was signed with the UNESCO-listed Robben Island Heritage Museum in Cape Town. Several other alliances were forged. But what was it about this vision that suddenly caught the attention of individuals and organizations engaged in peace work? Can we learn something from the history of the center about peace education as a kind of narrative strategy?

GLOBAL JOURNALISM AS A SOCIAL FORCE: TEACHING JOURNALISM AS 'GLOBAL JOURNALISM'

This is a long-neglected draft paper from a conference in 2009, now being worked around to a publ... more This is a long-neglected draft paper from a conference in 2009, now being worked around to a publishable paper, in the context of my renewed teaching contact with the University of Addis Ababa. In the original abstract, I wrote -- and please comment, as it would help: "Terms such as 'global journalism' or 'digital journalism' are gaining credence worldwide as somehow distinctive of a kind of journalism – with a focus on the global. A first issue is this: Can we speak of a global journalism as something else and something more than journalism? From an educator's point of view, some philosophical questions emerge that rest uneasily in the tension between a global journalism framework that still has to be locally oriented if it is to be journalism at all. Secondly, a US-European notion and value systems in journalism is rooted in a social history far different from common experiences in many other corners of the world. While this is an old debate in communication studies in a more general sense, it is now fast presenting journalism education with a rather specific challenge. This paper addresses the concept of global journalism as it has been presented in some select books and articles recently, from that point of view it outlines six issues that in sum make up a challenge for journalism educators seeking a position between a universalistic and a particularistic approach to communication ethics in global journalism education and planning."

At a time when basic assumptions about the future of learning are being called into question as a... more At a time when basic assumptions about the future of learning are being called into question as a consequence of rapidly developing technologies, the moment may be right to also contemplate on the presence of learning in society; how does the coming wave of digitalization of work and leisure impact on our thinking about the role of learning in society? The " Socratic ideal " of probing dialogue and an epistemology based on mutually developing horizons of conviction may be going out of date? Or perhaps the evidence points to exactly the opposite conclusion – perhaps the future of learning at home, in school, at universities, at the workplace and in the clouds of networked computing points to a new media-augmented learning reality based on virtual social interaction? There comes the future, and here goes everybody…
