I. INTRODUCTION.
I've no affiliation with George R.R. Martin, HBO or the actress Anna Popplewell. This is simply a private and independent roleplay blog for ALYS KARSTARK, a minor canon character from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. This blog is predominantly BOOK BASED, but I'm not opposed to roleplaying the 'show canon' if asked.

II. SELECTIVITY.
This blog is PRIVATE, which means that I will only write with mutuals. All the starter calls, plotting calls, open starters and other manner of interactions are reserved for my mutuals as well, unless stated otherwise. However, non-mutuals can always send me MEMES and out of character questions.

III. FOLLOWING BACK & UNFOLLOWING.
I don't follow back everyone. This is not meant to give any offence or insult any of you. If I don't follow you back, it doesn't mean I 'hate' you or your blog. I just like a clean, orderly dash that I can keep up with, and it's likely that I couldn't see our characters interacting together. If you disagree, never hesitate to shoot me a message with a specific plot idea and convince me otherwise. There are very few reasons why I might UNFOLLOW a mutual, such as being inactive for months without a hiatus notice, spreading hate about others, or unfollowing me out of the blue.

IV. EXCLUSIVITY.
I do NOT have exclusives, and I doubt that I ever will. I love writing Alys, I love roleplaying in general, and I really enjoy reading various interpretations of the same character. I have no problem the notion of exclusivity and if other people choose to practise it, that’s their call. But I am open to roleplaying with dozens of different versions of the same character if I happen to like their writing.

V. ROLEPLAYING.
I prefer plotting before writing together, but I know that some people favour spontaneity, so either is fine by me. My ask box, IM and starter calls are always open to mutuals. I'm also very OC and crossover friendly, so never be afraid to approach me with heavily canon divergent and wildly AU ideas. Let's create a new verse together. The chances are, I will LOVE you for it.

I roleplay any length, ranging from novella to simple conversations with few sentences. As cliché as it's going to sound, I look for quality, not quantity. However, I find it very rude when I write someone a great ( and long ) starter and only receive half the length, or less, as a reply. I will always try to match your length, more or less, and I would appreciate if you did the same.

VI. THE BOOKS VS. THE SHOW.
Like I mentioned earlier, Alys is a CANON character that has yet to appear on the show. Personally, I don't think she ever will, so this blog is obviously book-based. However, that doesn't mean I'm against roleplaying with people who have only watched the show. Just make sure you message me first if that's the case, and maybe check out Alys Karstark's page on ASOIAF wiki.

I have no problem with following most of the show storylines, but the one thing I cannot abide is the SHOW!HOUSE KARSTARK. No, Karstarks do not hate the Starks. Eddard and Torrhen died trying to protect Robb from the Kingslayer in the books. Alys chose to seek help from 'the last son of Eddard Stark,' and there's a saying in the North that goes like, 'Scratch a Karstark and you'll find a Stark.' They recently had a conflict between their houses because of the execution of Rickard Karstark, but they've had a thousand years of kinship before that, thank you very much.

I will not acknowledge ANY show elements regarding House Karstark. This is not negotiable. ~~Who the fuck is Harald Karstark though, he's no brother of mine?~~

VII. RELATIONSHIPS.
I'm a sucker for building ALL KINDS of relationships. And I do mean all kinds: childhood friends, neighbours who hate each other, people who occasionally say 'hello' at their workplace, longtime rivals, ex-roommates, friends from enemy families... you name it. I love pre-established relationships as well. If you've any interesting ideas for our muses, let's exchange Skypes or use the IM feature to scream headcanons at each other all night.

Please note that, as far as romantic ships go, I'm a very picky shipper with Alys. I enjoy ships as much as the next person, but THE MUN IS NOT THE MUSE, and my interpretation of Alys is not someone who develops romantic attachments easily. For us to establish a ship, I require not only long interactions and chemistry between our characters, but also conversations between the muns to build on their relationship. If you're interested in shipping our muses, shoot me a message, but please don't be offended if I decline.

VIII. TRIGGERS AND NSFW
I don't have any triggers, but there are topics that make me very uncomfortable. Chief among them is STARKCEST. Please tag it if you wish to interact with me, because I will unfollow / not follow back anyone who posts untagged Starkcest. ( Yes, Starkcest includes Jon / a Stark kid, don't give me that 'but they're cousins!' please. It's still incest. )

If you have any triggers that you'd like me to tag, please let me know.

I roleplay A Song of Ice and Fire series. So death, blood, battles, and R'hllor knows what else will be a part of this blog. However, I must say I'm not very into smut. I don't mind it, and I might write it on occasion, but ONLY with muns I feel comfortable with, and NEVER with minors.

biography
Alys Karstark is the youngest child and only daughter of Lord Rickard Karstark, head of House Karstark and Lord of Karhold. She has three older brothers: Harrion, Eddard and Torrhen.

The grey and dreary walls of Karhold, filled with harsh men for harsh lands, may not have been the most suitable place for a little child, but it was the only home Alys knew, and she LOVED everything about it. Having been born during a long summer and a time of peace, all stories of wildlings, long winters and wars were just that for her: stories.

Much like any other child of her age, Alys thought all these stories were terribly exciting, and she loved playing in the summer knows, not understanding why all the adults dread a time when snows will begin to fall in earnest. The lack of a mother, who died when she was a baby, was made up by how everyone seemed to indulge her, especially her three older brothers and even her stern, harsh father. She was a happy and friendly child, if a little stubborn and spoiled, easy to laugh and easy to trust.

But ALL TOO SOON, childhood was at an end, and in the eyes of the Westerosi, ( but more importantly, her father's ) Alys began to be considered almost a woman grown.

No longer did her father indulge her as much as he used to, even though her brothers still take her side more often than not. Before she could even bother to give the matter a thought on her own, there's been talk of betrothals and even marriage. Alys found out around this time that, when she and Lord Karstark visited Winterfell when she was six, it had been because Rickard was hoping to arrange a match between Alys and Robb.

After no such arrangement happened, her father started corresponding with the Hornwoods and Cerwyns, now that he's lost any hope she might wed her to heir of Winterfell. She didn't share her father's disappointment, as marriage was the last thing she wanted, but even her brothers wouldn't take her side in this matter, and she knew better than to defy her father, who's grown even harsher and sterner over the years.

With the days growing shorter and the long summer is ending, Alys CLUNG to the last few years of her childhood, last few moments beneath the sun.

Through the War of the Five Kings, Alys was stuck behind the walls of Karhold, praying her heart out for her brothers, father, and even her betrothed Daryn Hornwood. The gods must have a vicious sense of humour, however, for Daryn AND two of her brothers, were killed in the Battle of the Whispering Wood by Jaime Lannister.

Worse yet, after the escape of Jaime Lannister, Lord Rickard Karstark promised Alys's hand to whomever would bring him the Kingslayer. King Robb Stark executed Alys's father Rickard for treason, leaving only Harrion remaining to her as true family, but he was miles away, a captive of the Lannisters. Alys was left ALONE with her cruel cousins and grasping uncle.

Following Melisandre's prophecy to Lord Commander Jon Snow of a girl on a dying horse riding to the Wall, Alys, who has now flowered, managed to reach the Wall to speak with Jon after fleeing her cousin Cregan Karstark and the forced marriage they planned for her. Cregan's father, Arnolf Karstark, plotted to make his son the Lord of Karhold by forcing Alys to marry Cregan and also declaring for Stannis Baratheon to goad the Iron Throne to execute the rightful heir of Karhold, Harrion.

To avoid this, Jon arranged for Melisandre to marry Alys to Sigorn, Magnar of Thenn, thus creating a new noble house that would claim Karhold should Harrion ~~perish~~.

It is not war of men against men that she must face now, but the very stories her wet nurse told her when she was young. Winter is here and a long darkness is about to fall heavy on the world. Though she survived thus far, she has no illusions about a lasting safety. The stakes are higher than they were ever before, for it is not politics and armies of men they will soon be forced to face: it's DEATH ITSELF.

A DREAM OF SPRING.

The long darkness is ended. The War for the Dawn is won by humans at the cost of great sacrifices. The Others are driven back to the Land of Always Winter once more, and won't return for thousands of years. But the population and resources of Westeros has been decimated SEVERELY. Everyone struggles to rebuild their country, homes, and lives. The Seven Kingdoms is once again seven separate kingdoms, and The North has been united under a Stark once more. Rebuilding a kingdom that has been ravaged by war and ancient evil is not easy. But Lady Karstark and her Magnar try their hardest to build a better home, and rediscover spring.

SMELL THE TREACHERY.

Sansa Stark is destined to be Joffrey's queen, and every queen needs ladies-in-waiting. This is how Alys Karstark finds herself in the viper's nest they call King's Landing. Her father gives her up to this service willingly, calling it a 'great honour for their house,' and extracts the promise from the Starks that they will find Alys a proper Southron match when the time comes. Alys doesn't feel honoured, nor does she feel particularly excited about the marriage prospects. Untrained in the arts of courtly ways of the South and the politics, she must now fulfill her duties as a lady-in-waiting for the future queen. In this place where treachery is abound, she longs for the simplicity of the North.

STILL WITH HEARTS BEATING.

TIMELINE: winterfell au

LOCATION: the north ( winterfell )

Rickard Karstark is successful in his aspirations to arrange a match between his daughter Alys and the heir of Winterfell. She is a mere child and hardly happy with the arrangement, though no one sought to ask for opinion. She is sent to Winterfell to be fostered and raised by the Starks at the tender age of EIGHT. Though the Starks are as welcoming as his betrothed is kind, she still struggles to come to terms with the future looming ahead of her. Not much is expected of her, at least for now, yet it's still hard to miss the knowing stares full of appraisal from all those around her. The kindest among them still treat her as a child and an honoured guest still, but it seems to Alys as though the childhood ended the moment she passed through the castle's doors. ACROSS THE NARROW SEA.

TIMELINE: essos au

As a girl born and bred at the heart of the North, ending up across the Narrow Sea was NOT among the things Alys expected to happen to her. But when her grasping uncles conspired against her, she had no choice but to flee by any means necessary. She would have preferred anothern northern holdfast, but as fate would have it, she found herself in White Harbor. From there, there was nothing to do but book a passage to the Free Cities, across the Narrow Sea. ALONE, and among people who spoke strange tongues, held to unfamiliar gods and dressed in queer garbs, Alys tries her best to build a life for herself in this strange continent.

GRIEF AND GLORY.

TIMELINE: targaryen dynasty au
AGE: 16+ ( thread dependent )
LOCATION: the red keep, king's landing

King Rhaegar prefers to surround himself with scholars and maesters instead of warriors, and seems more keen on remaining buried in old scrolls rather than holding court. Some whisper of a new Mad King, speaking of King Rhaegar's obsession with old prophecies and tales of the Age of Heroes. When her family had visited the court some years past, Alys was so enchanted by the silks, jewels and colours she begged her father that they might stay. Lord Rickard had duties in the North, but he consented to his daughter's wishes and gave her into the service of Queen Elia. After four years at court, Alys has grown very fond of her queen, but she's not so ~~enchanted~~ with King's Landing anymore. King Rhaegar continues to desire the third head for his dragon, Princess Elia cannot conceive and the lords of the realm are growing restless with their distant and studious king. The Long Summer is drawing to an end and winter is coming.

The First Age in Middle-earth is not the safest place for the enemies of Morgoth. The three houses of Edain are particularly vulnerable, for they are not only few in number, but have already earned the Great Enemy’s special ire for having DENOUNCED him and fled to the west. Alys is a young woman of the House of Bëor, living in Dorthonion with the rest of her kin. Her mother was taken away from them from one of the many evil plagues the Dark Lord sent upon his enemies, and her father is a staunch supporter of any opposition to Morgoth. Though Bëorians are brave people as they are loyal and true, survival is an actual issue in Dorthonion, much like it is in everywhere else where the Enemy's presence is felt. Men, women and children alike fight to defend their homes and lives, and yet darkness continues to close in.

OUT OF THE GREAT SEA.

TIMELINE: second age au
AGE: 25+
LOCATION: númenor

Alys was born in Númenor at its height, during the last years of Tar-Aldarion's reign, before the kingdom and its peoples fell into darkness. She is descended from those who were once called the House of Bëor, making her a part of the small group in Númenor who speak Adûnaic with a notable Bëorian accent. With the rest of her kin, she resides in the western part of the island, the Bay of Andúnië in Andustar. She enjoys the fair lands and shores of Númenor, but it is THE SEA she loves the most. At the time of Aldarion, women weren't allowed to be on the Guild of Venturers, but Alys dreamed of sailing with them since childhood. Many rules regarding women changed when Queen Tar-Ancalimë ascended to the throne when Alys was in her mid-twenties, leaving her free to sail to Middle-earth and yet undiscovered corners of the seas as she would.

WALKING IN LONELINESS.

Alys was born in late-Third Age, to a mother and a father of proud Dúnedain heritage. Her father was a native of Dol Amroth, which is where she spent all her childhood and girlhood. Her mother, however, once belonged to the rangers of the North. Growing up, Alys knew almost ~~nothing~~ of her mother's side of the family, and she didn't pry, sensing that it was not something she liked to talk about. A sense of darkness was always present in her mother, which her father called 'the shadow of the Enemy.' After losing both of her parents within a year, Alys becomes more and more interested in her family's past. She eventually tracks down her distant kin, hardened and tough warriors whereas Alys' had been a gentle and easy life. They still manage to find an understanding, and Alys becomes embroiled with other rangers and their way of life. Her transition from a Dol Amroth girl to a ranger is not EASY by any means, and on more than one occasion she thought to leave it all behind and return home. But she never does, and she eventually comes to feel like these rough rangers were whom she was meant to be with. She can feel it in her blood that the shadows are lengthening all across Middle-earth.
A SLEEPING DRAGON.

Alys has been a student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since she was eleven, and leads a rather ordinary life. As ordinary as a naturally adventurous GRYFFINDOR can, that is. But save a couple of broken bones as a result of duelling in the hallways, and a string of magical accidents easily fixed, she's had cause to complain. She was born in York, England, to a wizard father and a muggle mother. Her mother passed away when she was five and she has no other siblings, but she is close enough with her father that she never felt alone in her childhood. She has a large group of friends in Hogwarts, though a number of people dislike her as well for being a vocal defender of Muggles and Muggleborns. With the return of You-Know-Who, her political ideas are more dangerous now than ever, but for now a watchful peace reigns over the wizarding world. Alys has no career plans for the future just yet, though she thinks she would prefer to do something independent over a Ministry job. Her favourite classes are Astronomy and Charms, and she really enjoys spending time on Hogwarts' grounds.

Alys Karstark was a hard-working and NORMAL young woman from York, thank you very much. When she moved to New York for her Neuroscience postgraduate degree and landed an internship position in the Stark Industries, the strangest thing she expected to encounter was the infamous eccentricities of her new boss. But it soon became clear that when one worked for Tony Stark, even if they happened to be a 'lowly' scientist, they ended up getting mixed up with heroes, magic, and bloody Norse Gods. While she didn't think herself a coward, she had never been the most ADVENTUROUS of people, and she often finds herself wondering if the good pay is worth all these risks of heart attacks on a weekly basis. WICKED REST UNEASY.

The Karstarks are an old and wealthy family who moved to Seattle from Edinburgh when Alys was very young. They've had a regular if somewhat secluded life for many years, until the night which Rickard Karstark and his two younger sons were ripped apart by a WEREWOLF. A group of hunters tracking the creature arrived soon after, and that's how Alys and Harrion ( the only brother still remained to her ) become introduced to the world of supernatural hidden all around them. Harrion becomes a hunter in a misplaced desire to avenge their family. But Alys, never being one of martial nature, has more interest in the HISTORY AND LORE aspect of it. In such a short time, the brother and sister establish a reputation among the hunter community, especially in the West Coast. Harry as a fierce hunter, and Alys as an obtainer of all manner of supernatural information.

For thousands of years, maesters and sailors had no idea what sort of lands lay west of the Sunset Sea. Some even questioned the EXISTENCE of such lands. Many adventurers tried to sail west beyond the Known World, and most of them were never heard of again. It all changed when a group of strange, foreign men and women landed on the Sea Dragon Point with a handful of ships. Westeros is in a chaos after the War of the Five Kings, and too WEAK to stop raiders and invaders. The northern lords and ladies are especially wary, for it is on their lands these foreigners landed in. Alys, now the Lady of Karhold ~~unless~~ until her brother returns from captivity, is more curious than afraid. These men are too few and armed in very poor steel to be a genuine threat, in her opinion. She would much prefer to learn about the lands beyond the Sunset Sea rather than make war on a few dozen foreigners, no matter how fierce and warlike they might be.

Alys Karstark was born in York, England, to a very old and wealthy family. She became estranged from her family at the age of 17 after the death of her two brothers, for which she blames her father. Even his death mere months later did not soften her stance against his memory. She moved out of their house and cut all the remaining ties with her family at the age of 20, following a violent altercation with her cousin Cregan, which resulted in her filing a restraining order. She chose to move to London for her university education — but mostly because she wanted to get away from her remaining family. She also wanted to be with her closest friend, ROBB STARK. He studies law and she attends medical school, and they live together in a two-bedroom flat. ( exclusive ship with @wolfsouled ! )

01. CAN I EDIT YOUR BASE CODES AS MUCH AS I WANT FOR MY PERSONAL USE?

Yes. You may do whatever you want with it as long as you keep the credit right where I put it. Don't move it to another page, or make it so small that people will need to adjust the screen size to %200 to see it. Other than that, feel free edit my themes and make them unrecognisable. Follow your dreams.

02. CAN I USE YOUR BASE CODE IN MY COMMISSIONS?

Absolutely not. If you try to make money off of any part of my code, no matter how small, I will report you to Tumblr, which will actually cause you headache thanks to their Fair Use policy. Don't think I'm bluffing here, I got at least a dozen people banned before. Making money off of someone else's hard work is absolutely DESPICABLE, and I will make no exceptions to this. Thanks.

03. DO YOU TAKE COMMISSIONS?

No, I do not. But I organise giveaways once in a while.

04. DO YOU TAKE THEME REQUESTS?

05. WHAT'S THE BACKGROUND SIZE I SHOULD USE?

If you want to know the specific sizes of the backgrounds I've used, you can see them by saving and opening the backgrounds on Photoshop. They're RIGHT HERE in my codes. As long as you set your background image to 'top-left,' the size of the image doesn’t matter that much, as long as it's not too small.

06. CAN I TAKE PARTS OF YOUR BASE CODES AND USE THEM ON MY OWN THEME?

I do not allow that, no. I never bothered to write this down until now because I thought this should be a given, but apparently not. And it doesn't matter if you offer to give credit either. Please do not lift parts of my code and use them elsewhere. I have many tutorials and resources posted about how I make my themes. Use those instead.

07. THE POP-UPS ON YOUR THEME AREN'T WORKING, HOW DO I FIX IT?

I've heard this happened to some people since Tumblr decided to give us yet another useless update. Luckily, it's very easy to fix. Go to your blog settings and turn off the encryption settings, as shown HERE.
01. I CAN'T CHANGE THE LENGTH OF THE DESCRIPTION SIDEBAR?

If you have a SCROLLBOX in that particular content ( ‘actualnews’ ), what you call 'the length of the code' doesn’t matter. So change THIS HERE instead of THIS. If you choose to get rid of the scrollbox entirely, then the part I highlighted with blue becomes relevant.

02. I'M TRYING TO ADD A BORDER AROUND THE CONTAINER AND / OR THE SIDEBAR CODE, BUT IT'S NOT WORKING?

Since I add borders right into my background, I probably overlooked adding the code into the html. For most box-like containers, the border code goes something like this: border:0px solid #131313; Just add it somewhere in #pcontainer or #actualnews, or any other container you might make.

03. I'M TRYING TO CHANGE THE COLOUR OF THE TEXT, BUT I CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT TO WORK?

Go to the part of the code that I labelled as /* general look & background */ You can use ctrl + F to find it instead of scrolling through the entire coding. From there, simply change the part that says color:#272727; to whatever you want. HERE'S A SCREENSHOT, just in case.

04. I WANT TO ADD MORE TABS ( LIKE THE ONE YOU HAVE ON YOUR VERSE PAGE ) ON OTHER PAGES. HOW DO I DO THAT?

HERE'S MY TABS TUTORIAL. There are three steps / codes in there. You can add as many tabs as you like to any page by repeating step / code three by pasting it on a page of your choosing.

05. HOW DO I CHANGE THE BACKGROUND COLOUR OF THE POP UP PAGES?

Ctrl + F and search for 'BASIC POP UP DETAILS.' All the simplest settings for pop ups are located there. If you'd like more specifics, HERE'S where you change the background colour.

06. HOW DO I CHANGE THE LINKS FROM POP UPS TO REGULAR LINKS?

Simple. Just find your pop-up links and delete the pop-up + box value. For example, CHANGE THIS BIT HERE into THIS.

07. HOW DO I REMOVE THE 'REFRESH' LINK IMAGE THAT SAYS 'EVERY FLIGHT BEGINS WITH A FALL'?

Ctrl + f to find the part where it says 'alinks,' and edit THIS PART HERE. Just remove the base image and replace it with any other image or text that you want.

08. WHERE IS THE CODE FOR THOSE ORBS FLOATING AROUND? I WANT TO CHANGE THE COLOUR / REMOVE IT, BUT I CAN'T FIND IT.

It's called BLOBS IN A JAR. Just use ctrl + F to find it. If you want to remove it, delete the entire script. If you want to change the colour, just edit this part: var colour="#0e0e0e"; // what colour are the blobs.

09. WHICH PART OF THE CODE SHOULD I CHANGE TO ADJUST THE POSITION OF UPDATES / SIDEBAR?

Change the values of margin-left and margin-top. If you increase the value of the margin-left, it will go FURTHER LEFT. If you increase the value of the margin-top, it will go FURTHER UP.

02. MY POST INFO AND TAGS ARE ACTING WEIRD, THEY ARE NOT SCROLLING CORRECTLY AND OVERFLOWING INTO THE NEXT POST. HOW DO I FIX THIS?

Solution 1. Since almost a dozen people approached me with this issue, I took the time to rewrite all the info, tags and related codes. The updated code has been uploaded to pastebin some time ago. It looks a bit different than the original one, but it was inevitable in order to fix the glitch. If you're still using the old version of the theme, I would advise you to revisit the pastebin page ( linked on my original post ) and start using the updated code.

Solution 2. ( In case you use the updated code and the problem still persists. ) Someone suggested to me that it's because most container themes don't work properly when the RSS feed is turned on. Which you can turn off through your advanced settings, like it's shown HERE.

03. THE POP-UPS ON THIS THEME AREN'T WORKING?

The pop-ups in my second base code work just fine. Tumblr's new safety precautions have just messed up custom blog coding a little. Go to your blog settings and turn off the encryption settings, AS SHOWN HERE, and they should start working like normal again!
