Anakin and Obi-Wan loved an idea of each other but never knew each other.

I read their relationship - and what a happy ending AU looks like - very differently to many.

People who ship them or believe Obi-Wan would be a cool uncle to the twins I think miss the point that the Team is a lie and the love was always misplaced.

Obi-Wan never knew Anakin, not the bits of that mattered. He perhaps knew they existed - his love, his desire for family, his passion, his anger, his fear - but he never understood them. He was incapable of understanding them.

Anakin never knew Obi-Wan, not the bits that made him a real person. Obi-Wan was an idol, an impossible paragon, that Anakin desperately sought to live up and violently resented.

They loved their own ideas of the other, not the reality of who they were.

Anakin's marriage and children would be a fundamental rupture of Obi-Wan's idea of him. Obi-Wan's reaction to the revelation would shatter Anakin's image of him.

I don't think either's love for the other survives that.

Obi-Wan I think would be bitter and heart broken. Turns out Anakin isn't a far better Jedi than he was. Turns out Anakin has been lying to him for as long as it matters. Turns out Obi-Wan failed Qui-Gon, failed the Council, failed Anakin (not as badly, clearly, as in canon, but he still failed).

I think he probably repudiates Anakin - and finally confirms in Anakin's mind that he was never worthy of Obi-Wan's love and he is now never getting it (which Obi-Wan is incapable of giving anyway). It confirms to Anakin that Obi-Wan respected the lie, might one day have loved the lie, but he never respected Anakin, he would never love Anakin.

Even if he doesn't - even if he does the common happy AU thing of (in a massively out of character way) decide he cares more about Anakin than the Jedi, that he is onboard with Anakin's marriage & kids etc - I think it is instead Anakin who rejects him.

Because an Obi-Wan who turns his back on the Jedi, who gives so freely everything Anakin has been desperate for, isn't the Obi-Wan Anakin loves.

Anakin wants something impossible - to be the Jedi he thinks Obi-Wan wants him to be, and in so doing "earn" the love and affection of The Perfect Jedi TM (who by definition shouldn't give it).

Getting that love AFTER having so obviously let down Obi-Wan would I think i) force Anakin to realise Obi-Wan isn't the impossible paragon he believed in and ii) bring up impossible to answer questions of "why now?".

At best they maintain a deeply toxic and resentful co-dependency.

I think more likely is Obi-Wan has his heart broken but maintains his self discipline and spends the rest of his life an empty shell of a human who happens to be the text book perfect Jedi. Anakin also has his heart broken but has a wife and children (and an extended family) and gets to see and experience love again - and learns that Obi-Wan was never going to give it to him.

star wars anakin skywalker obi wan kenobi Anakin's happy ending is enough therapy that he realises Obi-Wan was bad for him- previous tags I think that was a toxic situation that ought to have been resolved or mediated But I think that after a few years perhaps Obi-Wan and Anakin could have a cathartic conversation

I feel like the big push for AI is starting to flag. Even my relatively tech obsessed dad is kinda over it. What do you even use it for? Because you sure as hell dont want to use it for fact checking.

There's an advertisement featuring a woman surreptitiously asking her phone to provide her with discussion topics for her book club. And like... what. Is this the use case for commercial AI? This the best you could come up with? Lying to your friends about Moby Dick?

lesbiananimeism

One of the big pushes tech companies are making for AI is entirely in the tool of convenience. Take Gemini for example, one of Google's really big pitches for it is in features like Help Me Read and Help Me Write, which are like the lowest tier use case for deep learning models but are also the two AI features that the average consumer will actually care about. Sure they advertise the GenAI stuff Gemini Advanced is able to do, but they've woken up to the idea that the average consumer does not care about GenAI and non-AI Bros fundamentally loathe GenAI.

Every company with a language model got sucked into the venture capital pitfall of AI and now have to market the one set of features the general person actually cares about.

rageagainstthechristine

I work in advertising and the culture shift surrounding AI even from January until now (end of March) has been drastic. At the beginning of the year, the company I work for was using AI to design most of their assets. Clients started coming back and requesting that we no longer use AI generated images or videos for copyright liability reasons. Basically, there's no way to tell whose art or photography was scalped to make an image, so as companies who are trying to make a profit using potentially stolen images, it puts them in a gray area, legally.

Also, companies do look at their comment sections. Anti-AI commenters on social media ("this is not a real image" "I don't trust companies who use AI" etc) are seen by higher ups of a company. Basically, keep bullying brands who use AI, it's working. Now my company uses almost no AI for deliverables, which is a huge win.

mirrorofliterature

there's also the issue that there is no copyright protection (and imo should not be) for AI-generated works in many jurisdictions, including US and Australia

the classic characterization and effects of female characters in this franchise being summed up to bad because they “enabled” anakin when they were just trying to help him heal is one of the things that annoy me and I guess original trilogy doesn’t help with that a lot with for example Vader saying “obi wan also once thought that way” when it was padme who believed in him till her last breath. prequels are extremely important for context and also enriches the story and makes me love this saga more. obviously some stuff falls short with OT being filmed before but I think it changing the story from being male centric to something more diverse is important and crucial. I love how at first original trilogy was more male centric at heart with father-son dynamics and obi wan and palpatine being the big influence in anakin’s life but then when we got to prequels we actually learn women in anakin’s life had the positive affect on him and feel while obi wan encouraged repression as the male influence in his life and padme and shmi inspired him to be a better person and that luke was actually channeling the female influence anakin had in his life when he was saving him he vindicated his mother and grandmother and their belief in anakin

I think that “Anakin was a slave child who was groomed by Palpatine and raised by someone who wasn’t ready to take on a child, thereby leaving him in a social limbo state where he’s surrounded by people but only has a few close confidants, with the one he trusts the most actively trying to take advantage of him”

and

“Anakin was taught right from wrong from a young age, first by his mother and then by Kenobi, but any time he was presented with a choice, actively CHOSE WRONG EVERY SINGLE TIME”

are two sentences that can, should, and MUST coexist to fully understand Anakin Skywalker as a character

anakin03986

I don’t personally agree with this as Shmi and Obi-wan’s versions of right and wrong are contradictory. What Obi-wan say is wrong is something Shmi would consider right. There are plenty of examples out there of Obi-wan both contradicting lessons. One would say love is good and the other would say it’s natural but it’s not good for you. One would say to save people and the other would pick to save the ones you can and don’t waste your time with risks.

raleighrador

I think there’s the additional specificity of the Jedi and Kenobi’s “good” being “follow the rules and if you don’t know what the rules are listen to people older and more senior than you and just in case this is unclear we are going to let you spend dozens of unsupervised hours with the oldest and most senior person in the galaxy”.

It is the Jedi who actively shaped Anakin into someone who ignored his own sense of right and wrong and instead defaulted to the orders of “authority”.

Their strategic failure was not realising he recognised a higher authority in the chancellor.

anidala-for-ever

wizards in a tower getting high on space magic is no basis for a system of morality

Palpatine has never been someone who grows only someone who curates

he took what the Jedi made and manipulated it but you cannot make something from nothing

the difference between Kenobi and Anakin is the political alignment of the old men they outsourced their morality to

^ one of the most layered scenes in all of star wars, actually. like on top of everything else, there’s luke reaching out to his sister to see if she has a memory of their mother, because he has none, and he’s spent his whole life idealizing his dad, but now he’s going to head off and (if all goes as planned) die alongside his dad, so maybe he would like to die with a memory of mom as well. just one even

the thing about the tusken massacre many people simply do not understand is that there are likely no possible legal consequences for anakin

tattooine is a hellscape, you think they prosecute people for killing others? nah

tattooine is not subject to republic laws.

ergo, anakin cannot be prosecuted in a republic court of law - and neither can padme - because it falls outside the court's jurisdiction.

sure, they can still face personal consequences, but it doesn't really solve anything.

the jedi getting involved wouldn't help, they have little cultural knowledge of tattooine and would trample over everything.

it's an uneasy situation.

also, the tusken raiders killed more people than shmi, killing a lot of moisture farmers as well.

anyway my point being that criminally prosecuting anakin for the tusken massacre is unrealistic

raleighrador

The above is all true.

The other thing I have been playing with in my mind is that even if Anakin was held morally/personally accountable, I don't see how this doesn't FURTHER alienate Anakin from the Jedi.

Many fics use accountability for Anakin (however defined) as i) a stick to beat him with (boring and also lol home boy got sliced and diced and barbecued and forever tortured for 20 years, beating is not something he lacks) and/or ii) a launch point for redemption and reconciliation with the Jedi/the Lightside. Admirable but, to me, deeply unbelievable and out of character.

The Jedi don't see themselves as having any legal jurisdiction over Tatooine and clearly feel no moral responsibility to anyone who lives there. They specifically don't care enough to act in anyway that would help Shmi.

Anakin certainly perceives the Jedi as uninterested in and uncaring for Tatooine.

How then would the Jedi explain to Anakin that they do in fact care that he killed a bunch of people, who themselves killed a bunch of people including his mom, and they are now going to do something (where the thing is punish Anakin)?

The coherent in-universe (and I believe in character) explanation would be the Jedi are (correctly, justifiably) worried about Anakin falling to the dark side. Murder is bad. Mass murder is worse. Mass murder driven by being so angry you blackout is worse still, especially for a powerful Force sensitive.

The issue is that the nexus of their concern is once again Anakin and his feelings, not any sense of justice.

I just don't think Anakin would be able to accept or understand that. I think he would - honestly justifiably - be enraged at the idea that the Jedi don't care if murder and slavery is rampant on Tatooine, they only care if it is Anakin who is doing it.

I think he would think it was outrageous and unfair.

This is only emphasised if, for example, this comes out at any point after Geonosis.

Do you honestly think Anakin would have any sort of reaction that isn't nuclear to a conversation which essentially goes "we are totally ok with the Geonosians you killed trying to rescue Obi-Wan, we are ok with all the people you have killed during the Clone Wars, in fact we are ok with everyone you have ever killed EXCEPT that time you killed the people who killed your mom".

So not only is prosecuting the Tusken massacre unworkable within the established context, it also feels to me that narratively it is more likely to make things worse than better.

That is part of the tragedy. The only thing that is capable of bringing Anakin closer to the Light and not the Dark is unconditional love.

It's what Padmé gave him (on Tatooine if not always) and it is what Luke gave him on DS2.

The issue of course is that is blatantly unjust. Anakin/Vader has soaked himself and the galaxy in blood. He doesn't deserve grace, he doesn't deserve redemption.

To paraphrase Lucas and (separately) the single best take on this ever: but it isn't about righting the wrongs, it's about stopping the horror. No one who deserves redemption needs it.

anakin skywalker star wars personally I find the tusken massacre a really frustrating and deeply questionable plotpoint again I'm not defending anakin's actions but the situation is more nuanced/complex than most people deign acknowledge tragedy by its nature is inescapable within its own paradigm I love these tags from previous

"what if a dangerous man pretends to be trans to-" what if we actually dealt with the underlying causes of dangerous men. what if predators faced real consequences more often. what if you stopped using trans women as a proxy for your grievances with liberal feminism's individualist denial of the need to fight systemic issues.

what if you stopped assigning blame for patriarchy's evils to one of its more vulnerable victim groups.

what if you used basic logic and realized that a dangerous man wouldn't even bother to pretend. They'd just walk into the bathroom.

Green eyes shouldn’t actually be considered an eye color. It’s just not common enough, it’s a VERY SMALL percentage of the population, 1-2%. Green eyes are also caused by an irregular mutation. Most people have blue or brown eyes, so those are the two eye colors.

All the “green eyes” positivity is actually a bad thing, by the way. Having green eyes is linked to higher rates of retinal melanoma. You’re celebrating something dangerous that can cause suffering.

And besides, most people with “green eyes” lean closer to blue or brown anyways. They should just make up their minds and be brown eyed or blue eyed. And if it’s too hard to tell, they should get corrective surgery (because green eyes are dangerous, and associated with more difficult medical care!) or at the least wear contacts so they don’t confuse people. But also they should be required to

I hate to sound like this, but green eyes are a far more recent development than blue eyes in the mutagenic history of humans. So humans weren’t created to have green eyes.

And hazel eyes? Those are just a variant of brown eyes—come on, they’re far closer to brown than green. They just have a couple greenish traits. And there’s no way there’s that many green eyed people, or a wide variety of eye colors… It’s just not natural.

I don’t have a problem with green eyed people, they didn’t ask to be born that way—but there’s just too few of them for it to be an actual eye color. We don’t need all this “green eye positivity” or putting green eyes in media. The internet is making people delude themselves into thinking it’s more common than it really is.
