You should give Lu a chance. After 10 minutes, you'll know if it resonates with you, and then, you're in for 2 hours of memorable delight. I haven't smiled so much in front of an anime for years, probably since I first watched Tokyo Godfathers.
The movie starts like the coming of age story of a gloomy teenager. Fortunately, Lu bring some craziness to this setting, and many people, old and young, are transformed by the wave. Though the movie is mostly a funny comedy, the human portrays are generally subtle. The relationships between the main character and each of his family members are shown through little touches that end up building realistic emotions.
The drawing of the characters is original, and is sometimes comically altered. Though I enjoyed all this madness, some viewers won't agree. Flashback and some special scenes are drawn completely differently, in ways that would be tiring for a whole film, but are beautiful and surprising for short sequences.
