Satou Tatsuo was born July 7, 1964 in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. He is an anime director most famous for Martian Successor Nadesico.
After being graduated from Waseda University, he started his career as an animator and an assistant director at Asia-Do. Since he became a director in 1989, he has served as the animation director on some episodes of several TV animation series: "Chibi Maruko-chan", "Akazukin Chacha", etc.
Tatsuo made his solo directorical debut in 1995 with the TV animation series "Soar High! Isami". After that, he directed the TV series "Martian Successor Nadesico"(1996) and its sequel feature film "Martian Successor Nadesico: The Motion Picture - Prince Of Darkness"(1998).
In 2001, Tatsuo collaborated on the avant-garde animation film "Cat Soup" with an old friend, animator/director Masaaki Yuasa. The film won double prizes in the 6th Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal: "Best Short Film" and "Film Critic's Association Prize". It was also the winnner of the 2001 Agency for Cultural Affairs' "Excellence Prize" at Japan's Media Arts Festival. In the same year, he released the TV animation series "Shingu: Secret Of The Stellar Wars" which was based on his own original story.
