Hara Tooru was a producer. He was born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, and graduated from Waseda University.
He joined Toei Douga in 1959 as a production manager and planner. In 1972, when Toei Douga dismissed many of its employees to save costs, he founded Top Craft and became its president. After the company was reorganised into Studio Ghibli with the investment from Tokuma Shoten, Hara became the studio's managing director until leaving in 1991. The reason for Hara's departure was Miyazaki's proposition to build a whole new studio for Ghibli, and even though the company did not have the funds for it, the plan was set into motion with the backing of Tokuma Yasuyoshi and Suzuki Toshio.
