Hirano Yoshihisa is a composer. Born in Wakayama, Japan, Dec. 7 of 1971, Hirano started to study the violin as the age of 5.
He became fond of baroque music back in elementary school and later on composed music (self- taught) under the influence of J. S. Bach and A. Vivaldi.
Hirano found jazz when he was in high school. Under the great influence of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and John Zorn, he even started to play the alto saxophone. On the other hand, he composed a number of different kinds of music for various occasions such as theater, radio and dance. However, the encounter with the symphonic works by D. Shostakovich made him aware of the importance to learn further techniques of composition and orchestration.
He moved to the US after graduating high school and studied composition with C. Rouse and J. Schwantner at Eastman School of Music.
He won the first prize at NMYE Composers' Competition (NY) for "String Quartet" which was his first work at Eastman.
He returned to Japan in 1997 and started his professional career in Tokyo. He won the Nagoya Art Award for his piece "Myrtle N for thirteen string koto and violin," which he composed right after he moved to Tokyo. In 2001, he made his debut as a film composer with "Beyblade". He obtained the Kinokuni Prize for Young Artists in 2004.
Hirano is a composer with great interest in practically everything; from philosophy and literature to fashion and tabloid news. He loves animals, including reptiles and amphibians. But due to an unhappy accident in his childhood, he suffers from "caterpillar-phobia".
He is a member of the Japan Society of Contemporary Music.
