Anthropology, according to Dictionary.com, is the study of human beings' similarity to and divergence from other animals. As a social science, its study includes the origins, physical and cultural development, biological characteristics and social customs and beliefs of mankind.

Anthropology is the study of humans, early hominids and primates. Physical or biological anthropologists study the remains of human beings and hominids to investigate human disease, diet, genetics and lifestyle. Anthropology is the scientific study of humanity, concerned with human behavior, human biology, cultures, societies and linguistics, in both the present and past, including past human species. Social anthropology studies patterns of behaviour, while cultural anthropology studies cultural meaning, including norms and values. A portmanteau sociocultural anthropology is commonly used today. Linguistic anthropology studies how language influences social life.

These are the five main subfields of biological anthropology. There are also applied subfields; medical anthropology and forensic anthropology.
