Singer Kate Smith was born today 5-1 in 1907. Many US boomers grew up seeing her guesting on TV shows and singing the song God Bless America she made so famous. She passed in 1986. How well I remember Kate Smith. My father was a huge fan and I recall vividly him calling to me when she was on television. I think I fell in love with that voice because of him . . . he had good taste. Kate Smith had a long and very successful career, making many tunes popular, but making two uniquely her own: Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", and "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain". She  hosted and performed on The Kate Smith Show from 1950 through 1954, hosting until 1953 in the late afternoon hour of 4:00 pm ET. At that hour, she had a following of many children.
