Learning differences

Students have different learning style preferences. While some are visual learners and prefer to see charts, pictures, diagrams, etc., others prefer to learn by hearing, doing, reading or writing! The VARK model describes 4 learning preferences: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/ writing. Different people have a preferred way to learn. Some learn best by listening, some have to observe every step, while others have to do it to learn it. The fact is that individuals need all three modalities to truly commit information to memory: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. While most are typically stronger in one area than another, the trick is figuring out the preferred modality and capitalizing on strengths. It’s important to remember that everyone learns differently.

Everyones brain is wired differently which means everybody learns best in a different way. That is why UDL is so important. Teaching students in only one method will only reach a small portion of that class. Giving students choices and options gives the entire class a chance for success. Options and flexibility can be seen in the classroom by giving students options as to where they sit, how to complete an assignment, what type of assignment (oral, written, research, project), etc.
