A Jacquard Loom The Jacquard loom was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in Lyon in 1801 to weave textiles, mainly silk. It stored weaving programmes in a series of punched cards. Usually, about 4,000 cards were used for each design, though a portrait of Jacquard [see below] needed 24,000 cards. WEAVING MACHINE INSTRUCTIONS This is the instruction manual to maintain weaving machines. My father-in-law went in Winterthur, Switzerland to take a course for various mechanical adjustments on the weaving machines Sulzer. He was working at the Bruck Silk Mills (whose founder is Isaac Bruck), here in Cowansville. In 2010, the company have closed in Cowansville. The course manual is in french only. The first power loom was designed in 1784 by Edmund Cartwright and first built in 1785. Edmund Cartwright was an English inventor born on April 24 1743 in and died on October 30 1823. In 1792, Dr Cartwright obtained his last patent for weaving machinery; this provided his loom with multiple shuttle boxes for weaving checks and cross stripes.
