WW1, 1916. John Williams Streets worked in the local Whitwell coal mine to support the large Streets family from age 14 to 28, and after his shift he studied classics and French. Although he hated the idea of war he signed up in Aug 1914 in the Sheffield City Battalion. On the first day of the Somme he was wounded and missing. His body lay unrecovered in No Man's Land until 1917 when the fighting moved across the area again. In May 1917 a collection of his war poems were published posthumously.
