Chain stitch is a simple hand embroidery technique typically used to follow lines and curves (though it can also be used to fill in a space, much like split back stitch). There are two ways to do chain stitch; the "right" version is whichever version works best for you. On my blog, you'll find a beginner-friendly tutorial for both ways to chain stitch in hand embroidery, with instructions in written, photo, and (longer) video format. A video tutorial for the split stitch, an embroidery stitch that has a lovely raised look to it. It's perfect for outlining with it's braided texture. The split stitch is a lovely outline stitch. It's raised a bit from the surface of the fabric, and it has a lovely, almost-braided look to it. It also forms a more continuous line - unlike the backstitch where you can see the individual stitches. Here's how to split stitch. See how easy it is?

Larisa 🌸 on Instagram: "This is a beautiful pattern from the Simply Stitched with Wool book by @yumikohiguchi published by @zakkaworkshop 🌸 Thank you Zakka Workshop for this darling book filled with inspiring embroidery motifs!

I have never embroidered with wool on linen before and it turned out an interesting learning adventure. I absolutely love the texture and feel of this embroidery!

After a few tries, I worked out that in order to fill the petals with even Satin stitch, it’s better to split the petal (area) with one stitch in half, then split each half in halves again and then fill in each section. This way all the stitches are nice and neat. Try it. It might work for you too. Can’t wait to share the finished embroidery with you! 🌸
