She sighed. “Seriously? Come on. Tell me,” she prodded. He wasn’t budging and seemed oddly satisfied with her pleading. “A secret for a secret? I’ll tell you what I got you.”
“I’m not telling you!” he repeated.

Jo stretched nonchalantly. “My birthday was yesterday, so the boys and I decided to celebrate it today when we’d all be in the same place.” They’d been planning it out for weeks.
“Would you mind if I come along?” her roommate asked. “That sounds soooo fun!”
Brick and Lightning and Anne Maria all looked at Jo. She wished they hadn’t. Now she’d look like a jerkwad if she said no. But this was her birthday celebration. They couldn’t just let anybody join in.

When Jo returned to the living room a half-hour later—wearing her favorite hoodie, one Brick had designed for her a few years back—her phone was on but her notifications were empty. Nothing from Anne Maria, Sky, Lightning, the Revenge group chat, or anyone else she might have considered a friend.
The aimlessness unnerved her, made her brow crease in annoyance. There were plenty of days she was busy, driven, satisfied; but on the nights she wasn’t, she really wasn’t. It was an all-or-nothing mentality that made her want to claw someone’s eyes out.
