“The great Hanguang-jun has done it! The Second Jade of Lan has cultivated to immortality!”
That day, people cheered and celebrated in the streets. Alcohol flowed freely, and everyone was in high spirits. Wei Wuxian couldn’t get away from the ruckus if he tried. It was as though when Lan Wangji ascended, so did everyone who heard the news.
In Wei Wuxian’s mind, it had been a foregone conclusion. If anyone in his generation was going to cultivate to such a level, it could only be Lan Wangji. There was no one else so righteous, so deserving, so powerful.
Why then, didn’t Wei Wuxian feel much like celebrating when he heard the news?

The first time around, Lan Wangji hadn’t been so subtle.
He had found the young orphan in Yiling, 159 years to the day he had lost his beloved. Carrying a half-ripped doll and dirt on his pants, the boy had tear streaks across his muddied face yet still gave a fearsome pout when the older cultivator kneeled before him.
“Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji breathed, reaching for the boy. He flinched, and the Lan elder’s hand stuttered. He closed his eyes, counted to five, then tried again. “Wei Ying. You’re back. You’re–you’re finally back.”
The boy, his silver eyes wide and concerned, took a stumbling step backwards.
“Wei-” Lan Wangji started, aghast, as the boy immediately turned tail and ran.
Of course, like any sensible adult, Lan Wangji chased him.OR, Lan Wangji outlived his beloved and now finds Wei Ying again in every life. To varying degrees of success.

Lan Sizhui approached the figure curled up in the middle of the array, and slowly knelt down beside him. “What didn’t work?” He asked softly, hoping to help.
For a moment, it seemed like he wouldn’t answer. “My soul for his… But he answer.” That reply didn’t make sense to Lan Sizhui, and he felt a sense of dread in his stomach as he glanced over at Hanguang-jun.
Lan Wangji stood stoically as he examined the array. “Who were you trying to summon?”
Mo Xuanyu shuddered at the question before letting out a small sob. “The Yiling Patriarch.”
Centuries later, Hanguang-jun still wanders the world, helping those who need it and protecting those of the ghostly path. It seems as if Wei Wuxian’s soul is forever lost. That is until Wen Ning contacts him about how a large amount of resentful energy has started gather at the heart of the former Burial Mounds.

His purpose in life remained the same— to live without regrets.
But a fateful encounter with a heavenly official during an investigation leads him to something more sinister.
“Maybe in another lifetime, where Wei Wuxian had still been alive, he'd have had Lan Wangji for a companion, for a zhījǐ, who, with time, would see him for who he truly was and travel with him, just like his parents had.
