“Statement of Sasha James, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, regarding exploration of the tunnels recently discovered below the archive.”
Sasha takes off her glasses, hands coming up to rub at very tired eyes. She went to hospital, she’s been in physiotherapy, her leg still hurts. Police have been coming and going from the Institute, one particular set of police mind, she’s started to recognise the specific constables and detectives, especially the one with short cropped hair and the other with the hijab. Sasha’s not sure if it’s a good thing or not that they seem to know their way around already.
She’s not sure of anything, especially not the people in her own office.

Jon had sprawled out on the wooden floor, warming his body in a sunbeam as he watched his ex-girlfriend record her podcast. Unsettling as that image may have been last week, today it made sense: he was a cat now, awkward and small and honestly, a bit pathetic. But a cat nonetheless. Lately, he was questioning whether turning back into a human would be worth it. Everything and everyone wanted to hurt him: his boss, his employees, most insects, and even your average department store mannequin. Unfortunately, no one was really willing to just let him have this.

The tears are flooding down Martin’s face before he’s taken three steps down the footpath outside. He fumbles in his pocket for a tissue and more or less just sobs into it for a while. Which is why, when someone steps onto the pavement in front of him as he exits through the gate, and says, “Martin, why are you crying?” it takes him completely by surprise.

Or, Jon, in the throes of paranoia, stalks Martin all the way down to Devon when he goes to visit his mum. But when Martin comes out of the care home in floods of tears, he finds himself inexplicably incensed with whoever made it happen.
(This wasn’t meant to be a fix-it when I started writing it but it sort of ended up that way)
