American 1800s AU (preferably 1850-60s)
When her brother, Tamarisk Kentwood, is too ill to go to work, Naomi steps in to help provide for her family by going down the mountain the day before Christmas Eve to sell goods in town. Naomi started heading back home soon as the moon had rose over the distant mountains in the horizon but was stopped by her lonesome neighbor, Old Saul, who allows her to stay in his abode for the night at his request for her safety. While getting ready for bed he tells her the tale of the Demon Hunters; an organization dedicated to exterminating flesh eating demons to protect the greater good. Naomi brushes this off as a spurious story meant to scare children into not wondering out at night but couldn’t help but allude it to something her grandmother used to say as she blew out the candle. The next morning, she resumed her way up the mountain in a jovial mood, warmth spreading throughout her body as she prepared seeing her family on Christmas morning. But all changed when she saw a tear of black fabric in a tree…that day she learned: Whenever there is peace and happiness in this world…it’s always pursued by traces of blood.
