He suspected a little that Dutch had sent him in particular out with the magician for a reason, despite most of the others being free anyway, the sly fox. Dutch and Hosea had always been able to see through their son, and his tentative glances at Trelawny did not go unnoticed.

Freed could not lie to Laxus, but he could not find it in himself to speak the truth, even now when it was entirely possible that they would boil alive.
He could not lie to Laxus, but would he truly risk his friendship and bond with the man over his feelings? Especially when Freed had already concluded that they would never be returned.
He couldn’t, that’s why he stayed silent. That’s what led them to this situation. Freed would not lie to the man he loved and he wouldn’t speak of love to his face.
If Freed was going to burn for that so be it, but he didn’t want Laxus to burn along with him.

“Well, I don’t hate you!” Freed shouts back, voice so high and loud he’s straining his voice box. “I love you!!”
