Summary
This week we take a step to the right, away from academic discussions of fandom, to look at Janice Radway's classic ethnographic study of romance novel readers, Reading the Romance: Women, Patriarchy, and Popular Literature. This text is continuously referenced in fan studies, with very good reason we think, now that we've read it. Please come and settle in for Episode 6! PLEASE NOTE - We do talk about the place of rape in romance stories in this podcast.
This was recorded quite a while ago now, but we do hope to have something to offer you in the not toooooo distant future.
Also, please enjoy this episode's recs! Some of us tried to pick something that fit into the discussion themes, with varying levels of success, but they are all excellent stories and we hope you enjoy them regardless!

Summary
Thara Celehar has lost his ability to speak to the dead. Awaiting instructions from the Archprelate, he is left feeling adrift and inadequate as an instructor to his student, Velhiro Tomasaran. When Iäna Pel-Thenhior comes to him with a problem that is not within his remit, he still jumps at a task he feels capable of. But when that task leads back to the story of a missing girl and a body found with her ring, it's clear he still has responsibilities to the dead of Amalo, even if he can no longer hear them.

Summary
Nalis had not felt the weight of his own omissions so keenly since he had heard secondhand, weeks after his recovery, that the Archduke Maia’s entire household had been lost to plague, and that he was presumed as dead as they were– that he was missing, and that perhaps there would be a reward if he were found, and that there were men venturing into the Edonara to trawl for his corpse.
The fact that Prince Idra had made the order a request– that he’d clearly realized he had no real recourse against Nalis if he refused–
Csevet was visibly horrified, stifling himself from correcting the emperor’s phrasing. Nalis caught his eye, trying to seem loyal and reassuring, and said to Prince Idra, “Serenity, we are entirely at your service.”
