(In which Kakeru gets a cat, Machi gets a new friend, and Yuki tries to get his shit together.)
They’d stumbled into this whole thing, on a night when they’d lost track of time. Yuki had come over to study for an exam, but Kakeru had started playing some old 8-bit video game and they got distracted. After they’d smoked, the colors on the screen felt like they were inside Yuki’s head. His skull was a kaleidoscope and at the time that was hilarious, and better than what was usually inside his head. When Kakeru looked over at him Yuki felt hungry, hungry for the lights washing out his face, hungry for the softness in his eyes, hungry for the way he could read his mind sometimes, when he was done joking around or treading water trying to fill every silence.

He gets stupidly, ambitiously, concerningly romantic on these walks home. He plays scenarios through his head. Yuki stops him, catches him by the wrist and turns him around. He kisses him. Or Kakeru kisses Yuki. He changes his mind about whether he wants to kiss him or be kissed. The details are important in fantasies that will never be realized. Kakeru likes to think that he’ll be the one that got away at least, that years from now, in college or slightly after, Yuki will look at him, tilt his head sideways, and tell him he’s the one. Yuki is very romantic in these daydreams. He says things that real Yuki wouldn’t, but it’s alright.
Kakeru thinks he’s cursed, sometimes. He’s cursed to keep wanting things he can’t have. He wants Machi to say more than four words to him at a time. He wants his mother to stop pestering him about college. And he wants Yuki.

Summary
It might have surprised anyone who knew him. Yuki was tall and slim, with long fingers that seemed to be made for spanning a piano (although the girls who followed him around had other, less appropriate ideas of what those fingers could do), and a perceived grace that everyone - even the people who didn’t like him that much - envied. And yes, he was an accomplished martial artist, and he fairly looked like he was floating when he walked down the hallway. But the unfortunate truth of the matter was that when he truly needed to be graceful, Yuki was as clumsy as a bull in a china shop.
He frequently knocked things off his desk when he got agitated. He always managed to knock things over in the kitchen on the rare occasions that he cooked. And most horribly of all, he couldn’t dance to save his own life.
